I have not been at this for long...or much for that matter...but
Find the SONG before the anime =D It usually helps to go in that order. Nit pick the song, find its ups and downs, its tempo, its flaws, how can you splice it and edit the song. Can you do a song transition well? WILL THIS SONG WORK?!
I usually only make AMV's to songs I like and I understand. Most of the songs and CD's I buy have the potential to make an AMV for the most part.
