I'm talking about site banners. Should have made that more clear.Otohiko wrote:Then why is "analrapist" in your sig?Kusoyaro wrote:Eh, didn't mean to hijack the thread topic![]()

I wouldn't mind those site banners so much if people were more judicious in voting for them. Basically everything gets voted in unless it is absolutely terrible. I only vote banners worthy if they are:
1. Well-made and eye-catching.
2. The banner must represent and otherwise promote this web site, AnimeMusicVideos.org (from the actual banner contest rules)
A good-looking banner with an anime character sitting at a computer with the text, "Let your creativity roam free"...good banner.
A good-looking banner with a cute girl and a random word like "Floating" or "Soul"...what the HELL does that have to do with anything? That doesn't represent OR promote this website.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

Because he's talking about sitebanners, which serve no identifiable purpose.Otohiko wrote:Then why is "analrapist" in your sig?Kusoyaro wrote:Eh, didn't mean to hijack the thread topic![]()

Other sites have a small selection of banners and buttons, which are made available so that people can use them as a graphical way of linking to the site. Here on the .org, we have nearly 2000 'approved' banners, nearly all of which:
- follow the "cute chara - lazy effects - meaningless slogan" formula
- appear only on .org-internal pages
and
- suck (IMNSHO, ofcourse, the creators may feel differently)
Has anyone ever seen a 'banner contest' banner actually being used on another site to link to the .org? And if not, what do they do besides add badwidth cost and load time?

What do you suggest as the alternative though?
I think banners are generally in line with how advertising is these days. Brainless, irrelevant, but most of the public - attention-catching. The latter is, obviously, the only thing that really counts in promoting.
Representing? For one, I'm more sick of the editing in-jokes than the "feel" girls. The community is too charged with sarcasm and even bitterness sometimes, too - representing that is NOT a good promotional strategy.

I would like to say I often dislike the prevalence of sarcasm and cynicism among the older (mainly post-teen) members of the forum, but unfortunately I'm one of the sources of that - and I can't say I suddenly feel ashamed

a) Space, my friend. Blank and beautiful space.Otohiko wrote:What do you suggest as the alternative though?
b) How about a "video of the moment" link? Do a random select on the DB every second and put that in each page generated for the next second. (Timing subject to resource costs vis-a-vis current system) Creator - title - sources - link.

I like that idea; I'd take that over the banners any day.Kai Stromler wrote: b) How about a "video of the moment" link? But as far as space...
You know, though, it does strike me as odd that banners are for 'promotion' - but what are they actually promoting? I mean, they're on the site. If people got as far as the site, they probably have some idea as to what it's for. Clicking on the banner leads you to the person who made the banner, and yet the banner really represents nothing of, say - that person's own videos/favorite videos/VIDEOS, period. Just pretty girls and in-jokes, usually.
Hmm... I suppose you could see it that way too then.
I think there was a proposal a while ago in the Site Feedback area for letting people upload an "avatar"/banner for their videos to be displayed on the video page. How about taking that, and letting the 'video-of-the-moment' thing work in line with the proposed 'video avatars'?
That'd still keep some visual/eye-catching element on there, except it would actually be directly related to real AMVs.
Idea?

My personal hates:
navel gazing. Too much time is wasted arguing effects/no effects, if something has been done before, what's the best program to use, and all these other petty ass things. Quit worrying about the 'best' way to make a video and just go make one already.
There is no org community. The org is, at best, a place where multiple communities interact slightly. There's an #AMV community, the journal community, the old OT community, the various studios community, demonseals community, the 'i go to this con' community, etc. There is no org community however. Just to pick semi-random examples, when's the last time you've seen Inthesto, kitsunebeolnet, JaddziaDax, and Arigatomina talking together? They're parts of different sub communities and rarely interact, even when they post in the same topic it's rare to see them directly addressing each other.
Too much focus on popularity. Who cares if your video is on the top 10%, won an award, or whatever. You enjoyed making it (hopefully), isn't that enough? Stop with the ego stroking already. I quit paying attention to the top 10% and the opinion exchange forums for exactly this reason.
Since someone brought it up, I'll toss a 'me too' at the banners. Although they've gotten a lot less annoying for me once I used Adblock to remove them entirely.
