Has anyone bought LEGAL DVDs out of a sense of obligation?

...and at least one case where I bought it purely for editing (the Eva Renewal Films R2 set; I already had the crappy Manga Entertainment R1s).

When making an AMV you should use Legal copies of the Anime (US or Japanese). Rent it from a store, borrow from a friend, or buy it. Anything besides downloaded footage. The reason for this is because AMVs are already a murky pit of questional legality. If a company sees that you are using their anime footage in a video, atleast if you own the anime or have paid money for the use of the anime your in less trouble, due to the laws of 'free use'. However if your using 'bootleg' or 'illegal downloaded footage' (because there isn't a company out there that approves you to download their animes and use them), you can get trouble for the material your using as well as the grey area that is AMVs.

Companys currently turn their heads at AMVs as they see them as 'free advertisement', but should a company decide to not turn away (and yes there will come a time), if they turn to look at you and your videos, wouldn't you atleast like to have the leg to stand on that you atleast used footage you owned and paid for the use of. People think it won't happen to them, but those people using downloaded footage and spreading their usually bad videos everywhere are the one who are most likely to attract attention.

If I was a high muckity muck in a company and attending an anime convention's AMV contest, and saw a video that used obviouslly just downloaded (Stolen) footage, wouldn't you get upset. In fact it would be your duty basically to do something about it. Maybe you saw one video with downloaded footage, but what if everything used downloaded footage. Which shows that people have little respect for your product and instead of being an advertisement for your product it's now an advertisement on how easy it is to get the product for free. People keep saying it won't happen but it is already happening, cease and disorders have been sent out in the past and they will continue to be so in the future. So don't screw up the hobby for the rest of us.

Everything I've ever watched online and liked, I bought the dvds when it came out.

Right now, I'm ordering an entire series of R2 dvds, one dvd monthly due to it not being licensed and I want to support it...plus, I just like it that much...

I bought the entire first series of FMA because I liked it a lot after watching it on UTube, same with DNANgel. I also make good use of my library if they have interesting anime, I'm currently watching Witch Hunter Robin and enjoy it a lot, I'm also happy 'cause they have the whole series there.

I can't afford to do that. Too lazy to do the math but with everything I've watched online... if I were to have bought DVDs instead of watching em online (or even bought the DVD afterwards) I would need a few thousand dollars... probably more. You see, I'd love to support the industry but when everything is so damn expensive and difficult to obtain (in english, I'm talking about the new stuff), and when there is an easier and free alternative... well you see where I'm going with this. I feel like no less of a fan when I watch online, as I said earlier I only buy DVDs for my favourite shows (when Clannad comes out in NA... well you know). I can watch so much more, so much faster, and so much more easily by watching it online.

Hmm when buying ANYthing, it really just comes down to 'you don't fuck your friends over'.

I know personally several owners of game publishing companies. I buy their games.

I don't know personally anyone in the anime business. I buy anime only when I actually want the real thing. But otherwise, I truthfully don't give a fuck about the needs of the manufacturer. It comes down to their needs or mine. I don't feel bad about liking my needs more. A downloaded copy of a retail release anime dvd plays every bit as good as the commercially sold item. It just doesn't have a silk screened label and a fancy jacket on the case and a nice box to sit in along with the other cases.

I spent near 200 for Air TV. I felt like it. I had a downloaded copy before hand. I didn't actually NEED to buy it.
But I wanted that retail copy.

I have copies of nearly every friggin anime worth mention. I have a massive fan sub archive waiting to be replaced by actual dvd releases.
Yeah it would be neat if they were all legit.
It would be neat if money flowed out of my wallet in an endless torrent of 100 dollar bills too
But it doesn't.

But I sure like how 30 bucks a month can allow me to have the same thing I would have if I was filthy rich.

I have a pretty hefty collection of Region 1 DVDs.
I do feel like it is a sense of obligation, but at the same time I have a lot of Region 2 dvds that weren't purchased.

Though, most of the region 2's don't come to the States or the quality is ruined in the region ones.
