Re: It's a matter of size...
I find sizes like 720x480 and over just plain unnecessary. It bothers me because I don't have a really big screen so I often need to scale down the monstrosities that I download.

Re: It's a matter of size...
I don't find any resolution "bad". Small things I simply play in window, "too" big sizes either have LR version or I can downscale them myself if it's that bad that my PC can't play them without coughing up.
All those shouts about resolution being too low or too high are just elitist/lazy people :<

Thank you for your retarded insight.Garridy wrote:Get a better computer. :/However, for computer playback, I would take a decently encoded lower res video over a processor crippling bit-rate and res any day. I mean, shit, I wanna be able to at least watch the video ....

Re: It's a matter of size...
I don't understand this HDTV logic... but whatever... I mean... 1080p hdtv I presume?? do we not consider 720p hdtv any more?? That's media for you. I loved my 42 inch 720p hdtv/ monitor. why? cuz it was 42 fuckin inches god damnit!!! and only 1024x720 or whatever so LOWER rez videos actually looked better. And they were HUGE!!!
Of coarse one terrible day I dropped the son of a bastard and that was that. I now own a 19" that does 1920x1280... go figure lol. for you who don't get what I mean, is I used to see an OVERSIZED tiny rez and now I see a tiny OVERSIZED rez lol...
Anyway what makes an hdtv make older videos less clear than they were before? monitors could reach 1920x1080 for a VERY long time now... I don't get it. AFAIK it's called HDTV because the TV ppl want to feel smart, it's not like it really does anything to the screen like antialliasing or filtering, it's just a higher rez right??

Re: It's a matter of size...
With HDTV's, it IS a matter of size. Let's face it, most consumers are not going to buy a 52" HDTV and sit 3 feet away from it. The idea is that with a TV, you scale the resolution to match the size and viewing distance. Obviously you want 1920x1080 on something around 52" in size. For a 30" and below, 720 works just fine, and having 1080 will not neccessarily make your picture look any better, because it's a TV, and you're watching it at a distance.
It's a little different on a computer monitor. You're sitting close to it, so there is a noticable difference. Also, LCD monitors are a little different than LCD TVs. They're capable of much higher resolutions, because that's the intended purpose.
Think of it in terms of print advertising. You have an ad, it's going into a magazine, and also on a billboard. The billboard is HUGE, therefore you can use a lower DPI to print the images. Detail doesn't matter so much because it is HUGE. In a magazine, it's right in your face, so in order to have it look great, you have to have a fairly high DPI.
And HDTVs do have built in upscaling hardware, that do all kinds of image processing. My mom bought a 52" Samsung HDTV, and we watched an SD DVD on it. She was complaining about the quality being crappy, thinking that it would look as good as HD (thinking that just because it was an HD TV, everything would look amazing on it). I was trying to tell her the limitations of the hardware when using old SD video, and how SD gets uprezzed to HD. I thought the image looked pretty damn good to be an SD DVD.

Re: It's a matter of size...
Most built in up-converters in HDTVs arn't that great. She really needs a DVD player built for up-converting or a Blue-ray player (All of which up-convert for SD DVDs). In addition, the player needs to be connecting using a Component connection or a HMDI. The only issue I have is the blacks looking took black at times (if that makes sense).ZephyrStar wrote:dea

My fav amv has a resolution from 320x240
What I can't stand though are those amvs with ugly-old looking animations. Or everything from ghibli

Re: It's a matter of size...
I liked the old guides usage of suggested 480*360. Been using it for my old ass vids for a while now.
Stepping it up to 512x384 is the limit I think.
I'm NOT a fan of downloading 150MB amvs when I can get footage that looks just as good on a 28min. digisub for the same size.
Ultimately, it's not how big you are, but how you rock the boat. Low filesize + GREAT Quality = smart encoding. There's always that 'barrier' where you just can't shrink that 190meg 2min. masterpiece you made but frankly, that' not my problem but the editors.
Besides, smaller file sizes let you cram more stuff into your AMV masters dvd that you're planning to make right?
