No. That is when I apply for a patent (in the case of a new process or invention), or (in the case of creative works) copyright what I have made so that I can retain whatever measure of control I desire.

I should note that, at least under U.S. law, inventions and ideas are two different things, and ideas themselves cannot be claimed. Perhaps we are looking at this from two very different legal frameworks.
arzuro wrote:I expect that kind of reasoning from somone who was very very far away from the actual supply side of ideas.
Don't be so quick to judge: I AM on the "supply" side of ideas. You can verify this by going to Inkscape's source code repository and looking in the jabber_whiteboard directory of their CVS repository.

This is the parallel of your argument:

Ford invented the automobile in the United States, so German producers obviously cannot sell any cars in the United States.

That is clearly false. There is room for competition in idea borrowing.

So you're telling me if you have an idea and someone totally rips you off you don't care at all. I don't believe that one bit.

When it comes to AMVs? No, I don't. I don't place enough importance in AMVs to care.

Now, if someone were to pass my contributions to Inkscape off as their own, that is a different story, for two reasons:

(1) I care about that more.
(2) That code is copyrighted by myself and other major authors. I feel that if that copyright is to mean anything, I need to enforce it.

To summarize: My choices are about prioritization. I have many contributions to many different projects in many fields. There are some that I believe are not worth tracking, and then there are those that I think I should retain some measure of control over.

I still stand by the idea that copyright, as a property, is fundamentally different from the idea of "property" in the sense of a table or chair, and I exercise my ability to express that right in my choice of copyright terms.

JaddziaDax, lovepowered cars will work because there'll be a kitten in the trunk. I guess it's just lucky nobody will ever steal anything from an amv I made cause there won't be any. Cheers.

If someone stole footage from one of my videos i would first be confused, since i don't think any of my videos are not (yet) good enough to bother stealing, secondly i would ask that person why the heck they stole it from one of my videos (always curious to why anyone would bother with it), and thirdly i would ask that person to not do it again, and if they continue stealing footage i would drop a note to the admins or moderators or whoever deals with this stuff. But well, as of yet i haven't made anything yet that i would consider worth protecting and searching to org for amvs that might have stolen stuff from me (besides why download 50 noobie amvs to see if they stole footage from you, in my opinion it's a waste of time).

how many "mecha" animes are there?

how many "robot maid" animes are there?

how many "magical girl" animes are there?

how many "cardgame / monster" animes are there?

how many Role Playing / computer game animes are there?

and how many Linkin Ball Z AMVs are there?

sometimes people come up with the same ideas at the same time, sometimes they rip each other off thinking "I can do that but I can do that better!!"

granted I am not technically involved in this argument  ,

but how many Hillary Duff - What Dreams Are Made Of to Sailor Moon AMVs are there? about 5 or so at this point...

I'll tell you right now, the second one made directly ripped off mine, and the only reason I know is that is because some of the footage from MY version is in it...

to me it is the mark of a lazy person who doesnt want to take the time and work to get their footage, and thats what this thread is supposed to be about

but if someone wants to try to do the same idea as me, more power to them, even if they think they can do a better job than me... or actually CAN do a better job than me.

arzuro you ask "what if?" too much IMO, and I am sure that alot of these What ifs have been answered a million times on the forums...

There's no such thing as asking "what if" too much, I think.
