Re: How do you judge success?
I quit judging success on hits/downloads when I noticed that a vid I threw together in 5 or 6 hours (which I now hate and wish I never uploaded) got the most hits/downloads in the first few days of release of all of my videos and to this day is still one of the my most downloaded.
I quit judging success on star rating when I noticed one of my videos that'd I'd give a 2 has a 3.6 to 3.7 rating (exact rating changes slightly every now and then).
I quit judging based on rewards when I noticed that I thought half the award winning videos I've downloaded were crap. There's also the fact that the one award I won should have gone to a different video except the con has a 'one award per video' policy. It's hard to say I'm successful because I got a 'the best technical won Best of Show so we'll pretend this other vid was best technical instead' award.
I quit judging based on reviews when I noticed the same video that gets some 10's on quality also gets 5 or 6s. There's no set standard in reviews even in the reasonably objective catagories much less the subjective ones and way to many people give shit videos high marks just because of which anime it used, hell there's several on the top 10 list for that sole reason.
So several months ago I choose a different measure of success. I judge on if the video came close to what I wanted it to be when I started it and if even months later it captures my interest enoguh to watch to the end despite knowing exactly what's in it. So far my most successful AMV is one of my least downloaded and is middle of the road in stars/opinions but I don't care, it's one of the few that I don't cringe about when watching so therefore it's successful.

If you want to like your videos then don't experiment and just mass produce something you like. Three of the four videos I hate and wish I hadn't uploaded were experiments of one sort or another. Length of time on the vid doesn't mean much, my favorite took about 10 hours while I'm only so-so on the two that took several months each.Sephiroth wrote:If you want to like your videos. Take your time with them, and make them for yourself. That will increase your chances of liking them in the future.

my opinion:
i think the best way to see if your video is sucessful is to first of all figure out why you made it. if you made it for yourself to view and enjoy, and you enjoy it... sure it's sucessful. If you made it so other can enjoy it also... and they do... there you go. if you made it to win a contest, and it does... well it's sucessful. Any video of mine that some likes, i consider sucessful wiether or not i think the video sucks

if i watch it a month after i make it and decide there is nothing i could have done to improve it than it is a MAJOR sucess(none of mine have yet been a major sucess)
but generally a sucess for me would be having someone add my video to their list of 10 favorite AMV's...this gives me a warm fuzzy feeling only sex can top...thats right i said it sex...yeah...ive never had sex lol
