I really hate eternal damnation, but really like images. Just depends on the person.

I decided how to respond... I might hang onto this for future use:
While your negative opinion is perfectly fine, your expectation that "I never let this happen again" or "redo the video" is completely ridiculous. I have no obligation to you.

I had a difficult time deciding how to respond to your comments without wondering why in the world you are forcing expectations on someone who owes you nothing.

I'm not certain that the original nastygram is even worth responding to...

All I have to say on this is:

Expectations are a prison. - R.F.

I fully and wholeheartedly agree with you Fluxy, there's no reason an editor should cater to the audience.

Of course it's a fact that popularity often comes from accessibility and outward appeal, but there's noone telling you that you have to make vids for others.

My strategy is to adopt a similar approach - just as a viewer should really not bring in expectations, I have no expectations for my videos, either. While I'll do my best to promote them and seek opinions on them to see where I can improve my editing, I'm not very concerned with how far they should go.

But whatever. People always want to excercise their 'viewer rights'. It's only natural that a lot of good videos don't get approved by closed-minded viewers.

I've been making amv's for over a year now. I'm still not at the levels of the great creators. Some people have even said they see potential in my work and then are dissapointed because I'm not advancing as fast as they would like me to. Just do amv's for fun and send them to cons. If they don't get into the main contest oh well. At least there are other screenings. And the reactions of the ones that do watch it are what counts. And it makes you feel good when you see your video on that big screen and having people laugh or run over with emotions eventhough it may not be the best of the best. Sometimes it is the story that counts. If you know what I mean.

And oh, if that doesn't help and you still get those nasty op, there's always... help?...

The expectation of great videos is the unavoidable byproduct of creating great videos. For better or worse, people are going to compare a creators works against his other works. It isn't they way things should be, but the prejudicial nature of human beings isn't going to change.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

Uhm...the bet video really was a bet. If you search for it, you can even find the post where trythil announced it.

Not that it's entirely his fault. I was stupid enough to agree to such a thing while waiting in line for the AMV contest with other creators.

So I guess that statement should have a disclaimer :P

You're right, but even if it's "human" for us to do such things, it's still not the "right thing" to do. Given, I can't deny that I don't do the same thing and have been "disappointed," but I have never e-mailed someone and been so rude about it.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with your point, but still don't like the concept of it...even though I (and everyone) does it ;_;.
