Hey now, I released a video just a few months ago...jasper-isis wrote:Hope that's better.Pretend that I wrote:Don't worry, I wouldn't dream of desiring such celebrity. How can you be a celeb around the org and worshiped by all the noobs and rake in awards if you don't play the system? Why releasing when you're finishing and not worrying about popularity or cons or anything, that's downright sick. Get off the org, you clearly don't fit in here.

Clarification: when I said that, I meant that it looked to me like people were reading Godix's post and not realizing it was sarcastic because his familiar avatar wasn't there. I didn't mean to imply flipping off of anyone.
I mean, we all know there's no one who's ACTUALLY of the mindset represented by Godix's post, right?
I really hate having to explain what I'd hoped to be quick one-line jokes like this. And for further clarification, just to be safe, I have not been sarcastic in this thread at all yet.

Heh, this is the point of our miscommunication. It depends on what you mean: the mindset that he's describing, or the "real" mindset that he's sarcastically parodying.Scintilla wrote:I mean, we all know there's no one who's ACTUALLY of the mindset represented by Godix's post, right?
The "you should only edit for yourself" mindset definitely exists. Some way or another, it's been institutionalized in this community. And I think it becomes a problem when the idea gets tossed around in pretentious/hostile ways. So I'm just trying to offer a counterpoint whenever I see it pop up, jokingly or not.

Actually both mindsets exist on the org and if I cared to I could point you to the people that typify them. I'm the extreme example of the 'do it for yourself' side considering the reason I don't release videos anymore (other than obvious jokes) really is that I don't care if others like or even see my work.jasper-isis wrote:It depends on what you mean: the mindset that he's describing, or the "real" mindset that he's sarcastically parodying.
The other side does exist as well. There's a method to whoring yourself without being overly obvious you're whoring yourself, I could write a damn guide about it. Hold any video you've made until con season, even if that means you're holding it for over half a year. Pick which major con you want to release to, AWA tends to get more attention but Acen is a popular and much earlier so you don't get lost in the post AWA rush. Check all contests around that time no matter how small to get their submission dates, keeping in mind the trolling rules of the big cons usually allow something another con has shown provided the video was submitted before that other con showed it. With that loophole in mind, spam all the cons you possibly can without getting DQed from the big con. If you're at least halfway decent you'll probably get some awards, small cons usually have few and fairly bad submissions so it isn't hard to win there. These awards look great on a VCA poster by the way. You'll get the attention of the big con crowd as well. Then comes the next part of promotion on the org and top 10% gaming but this is getting long and you can all get my point already.
Fortunately the attention whore side has died down, there used to be a lot of it several years ago but it's far less frequent these days. If you look around you can still find it though.
Anyway, if you take my statements at face value or read into it the 'real' mindset I was putting forth, they both exist although not often at the extremes I painted them as.

So, the drunk walks into the bar holding some dog crap in in his hands and he says to the bartender, "Whoa, look what I almost stepped in". I'm not sure why that came to mind when I read this thread...
Con deadlines are great motivators if that's your goal so I suspect that has something to do with the spring start-ups.
If I can release at least 1 amv at any time of the year I'm danc'in a jig.

That's a fairly good reason why there's a perceived "release season" around here for videos.surfsama wrote:Con deadlines are great motivators if that's your goal so I suspect that has something to do with the spring start-ups.
That still in the end returns to the "being recognised" conundrum. There just seems to be such an aversion to admiting that people want attention around here, but this is really the only reason for this need for people to submit to conventions... unless it's for the prizes alone... (why?)...

At least try to use some data

The above chart links to a larger, interactive, and more readable version of the same chart that is updated every 30 seconds.
Until data collection has completed, you may see anomalies; give it some time and they'll work themselves out. Plot is premiere month/year versus percent contribution to all AMVs released on the .org that year. I have excluded years before 2000 because videos with a premiere date before 2000 tend to be backdated from memory and thus have a high probability of being unreliable.
There is also another chart available that plots all years against each other, but I don't recommend it. It's too unreadable to be of any use, in my opinion.
Dataset and full query methodology available upon request.
(Also: the .org developers really need to implement a useful Web services API. Being forced to make 160,000+ HTTP requests and screen-scrape an HTML page to do these sorts of analyses is, to be frank, fucking ridiculous. And, no, a database dump wouldn't be possible. The last two times I asked for one, it took months; and besides, it'd just be a snapshot, not easily updateable.)
Anyway, I think what this shows is that the "con season" phenomenon is slowly dying out; the plot seems to be converging around the 8% mark, which is roughly what you'd get if you had equal contribution from all months of the year.
Or perhaps this means that "con season" is starting to occur all the time, what with people starting up contests and MEPs left and right, and a few of them gaining enough prestige to level out the traditional patterns. Discuss.

Well, that was a premature observation.
Around 2006 there's this weird trend shift that I'm not sure how to explain -- incomplete data? different AMV environment? Beats me.

Re: Back in Business... AMV season is coming?
So what your basically saying is that seasons have given way to smaller events all year
long. Also that with so many MEP's none pulls up the attention like the older ones did.
