Apparently my comment about this topic being excessively stupid got deleted.

I still stand by it.

It all comes down to the editing. Any song can make a good AMV. But if you want widespread approval, a good song definitely helps. A great song also makes the editing very easy, and can occasionally hide relatively bad editing.

So basically, it helps, but you don't need a great song.

This has been said before but not by me: I generally enjoy videos more when I haven't heard the song before. If I've already heard the song, I already have an idea of what it's like, so the video is liable to not jive with that. However, if the song is new to me, the video becomes attached to the song in my mind. Euphoria IS "Must Be Dreaming". Jihaku IS "Best of You". Mitternacht IS "Mitternacht".

Well, that last one probably isn't the best example, but you get the idea. :P

The songs have nothing at all to do with the editors talent and skills in amv making imo.

First off it's entirely subjective since what one person thinks is a good song another might think is awful. That said though I don't think an AMV has to have a good song; if you employ the video well enough the sum of the parts can make up for the weakness of one.

Its sort of a yes/no to me,it depends wich anime and song it is obviously, but think of it this was, does a great song make a bad amv good.....of course not!,editing is 1000x more important then the song, depending on how good the editing is...well.if the editing is absoulutely amazing!,and theirs a sucky song on it...i can easily watch it..if the editing is that good O:]
But if the editing is a regular every day editing of an amv, with a sucky song...then it may or may not be a good combo, sometimes it jsut depends on your emotions or what your taste may be that day,and just for an example:Skittles by Koop,i honestly hated that song with a passion, but i loved that amv, because the editing just blew me away O:

Overall...my answer to the real question is yes or no,depending on the editor's skill.
