Hi! I'm new here But I just wanted to say that this person really hit the Nail on the Head.Rorschach wrote:I use a somewhat simpler method when rating originality. I just ask a few questions:
1. Has the song been used before? (Points off if it has. Fewer points off, however, if the other AMV makerdid a lousy job.)
2. Has the anime been used a whole lot? (If it has, it usually costs you a point.)
3. Is the combination itself something unusual that I don't see too often in AMVs? (Points on if it is, serious points off if not.)
4. Was the whole underlying theme something not exploited constantly in other AMVs based on the anime? (Points off if not, maybe a point or two on if it is.)
5. Finally, does the footage fit the song? (Any fool can throw random stuff together, and many have. Your action sync rating will affect your originality rating if I review you.)
Using an Anime or song that has been used before doesn't make your video useless but it does take it down a notch if there aren't other things in your video that stand out.
ok that's it for my first post!
Thanks,

If I can watch a vid and tell that the person put some thought behind it..rather than random clips hither and yon, and wasn't blatenly trying to rip off someone elses vid (ie: "borrowing" footage from other vids including effects)...Then I generally give it a good orginality score. If they do something with the vid that makes me go "wow..that was neat..or different ..ect.." then I score it higher.

Usually, the way I look at originality is very similar to what everybody else has said, but I also take general mood into effect. There have been a couple of videos that although they were very basic and somewhat cliché, I like the mood that comes across. Whether it was intentional or unintentional, to be able to create a strong mood in an AMV is an achievement that's actually half editing expertise and/or action sync, but it takes a heap of originality and insight to be able to arrange those clips to that music and create that mood. I do admit that the better you get with editing skill, the higher liklihood there is of a strong mood being able to be created, but not always the case.
