Hmm... I'm just now reading over all this and since my video was used as an example I just wanted to give my 2 cents on my point of view regarding that video.

There is a very very loose story. I tried putting it in the video profile but really I don't think the story matters. If I never went back and added the begining sequence with the Memories footage it would have even less of one. Basically the video centers around the civil war transmission itself. It has a begining, middle, and end and that is the closest thing that gives it resemblance to a story. My personal goal with that video was not to tell a story but rather provide a backdrop on which I could evoke certain emotions and to transform the mood in the video as the video progresses to the ending static. A few people have mentioned in reviews and forum posts that they didn't care for the video because it is just too random and I'm absolutely fine with that. People intepret things differently. Just because I strung scenes together to match the mood a certain way as the editor doesn't nessesarily mean someone else as the viewer will see or understand the meaning behind the scene selection the way I do... and with this particular video I'm expecting a good number of differing opinions about what people think they just watched.

So... I guess I haven't really sided for any particular side by saying all this. Art is open to multiple interpretations regardless if it has an intended story or you created the video yourself. If you can understand this than you should be able to better digest critisism you might not agree with on your videos.

Whoo, this thread is finally slowing down a bit...

First off, this is a subjective argument. Since there's factually [actually?] no 'right' answer....

Lots of people who'll hate a vid cause it has no story [my vids], will love it cause it makes its own [some of my vids]...

As far as being objectively correct...

I did notice this thing...

A well edited video, makes a good video. From what I can tell, even if you make a vid with good story, if its cuts are like 20 minutes apart or simply too long and don't follow the music, one can EASILY break up the world of amvs into two parts...

Good amvs:

They follow the music with either lyric or rhythm. Feel the Rhythm so to speak...

Bad amvs:

Are anime scenes with background music... They're in the background, not part of the amv...

I saw this in some of my karate tournaments too. Karate ka who don't do a musical kata right don't flow with the music, instead, we have a kata [form] with just background music, no beat, no dance, no nothing...

So there you have it. If we're gonna have a solid fact regarding what makes a good anime music video...

Add them up properly...

Anime + Music = anime music video...

not

Anime + Music - Timing & execution...

"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

Personally i don't really care if a vid has a story or not. Some do and are good, some are just random fight scenes and such and are still good. I don't really care so long as there's something interesting like a new FX or new series i haven't seen. But if there is a plot, it should be something original if it's to a series that's been done 1000X before like in whisper of the beast, make something original and stop thinking in terms of black and white. So long as a vid entertains me, i don't really care.
