Are we in another slump of amvs?

I dunno about you guys but I kept most of the videos I dled recently in the Announcements Forum, not because I usually keep the videos anyway until I have to make more space (which I probably won't have to for awhile), but because most of them were awesome, especially the Otakon ones.
I dled only a fraction of all the vids what the org hosts, so I pretty sure there are a bit of awesome ones out there. But I guess that's where the problem starts, and is already mentioned, of going through all those and etc. etc. I have low expectations of those I randomly encounter or didn't have to look very hard to get. It's kinda like finding a dollar on the ground (or more depending on it's awesomeness). But for the ones I hafta search for, my expectations are usually higher and more or less I'm usually disappointed. It's kinda like looking through a couch for a quarter but end up with only lint. I don't look for AMVs as much as I used to, unless it's a simple search. I don't see a slump. I just see less people leaving money on the ground, which will probably leave me looking for money in the couch, which I don't really like to.
I've tried avoiding this thread because I know I'd say something stupid, something what somebody else have already said, something completely off-topic, or a combination of those. So I apologize if I have done any of those.

Why must these 2 things be exclusive? Can't people have fun and be good at the same time? Isn't that what professionals in other fields (sports for instance) do? You have to realize that some people think competition and limit pushing and hard work are fun. Those people tend to be a big part of the "top-tier" of any hobby.Emong wrote:Is this community for creating "good videos" or for the editors to have fun with what they're doing and share their hobby with the rest of us?
It affects the perception of the hobby by outsiders. Not a huge deal, but It could have ramifications (that have been brought up in other threads - including an increased chance of crackdown and backlash here... one of the reasons for the wordfilter).CorpseGoddess wrote:So what if every joe and his dog puts up a video on the Tube? So what? Does that REALLY affect the creators here in the long run?

Fair enough. And you're right on that. I was speaking more about the venom that seems to come from here about the quality of vids on the tube. Yeah, I've seen some awful videos there. I've also seen a lot of awful ones here. I've seen some awful ones as the finalists in contests.
I personally think we have more to worry about on the Tube with fansubs and whatnot---actual episodes being uploaded. We may get a backlash on that, but then they'd have to start going after everybody who's ever posted a clip from anything they've matched with music or audio content that's not their own. And I can't even begin to imagine the percentage of vids that would take away from that site.

Boochsack has massive mindshare. We, on the other hand, have a somewhat ambivalent relationship with popularity...jasper-isis wrote:Then it shows that boochsack pulls away the great videos as well as mediocre ones. If only bad videos go over there and the good ones remain here, then shouldn't we be swimming in awesomeness right about now?

Besides mission statement we need a real philosophy on what these things even are. Otherwise were just crafting not making any sort of art. Yes alot of vids are about crafting which while important is overshadowing the art aspect of vids. Which is where we are now, vid look way better then they did yet a lot of people enjoy the older vids better. To put it another way star wars 4-6 compared to 1-3.
