I agree with Qyot. You can't just write down timecodes and be done with it. Many times I end up with multiple scenes all of which I find don't really work the way I planned.
It may take longer, but I think a bit of both a storyboarder and chaos engine is better to work as since you do plan out your video beforehand, but are able to make changes on the spot if necessary.
Having said that, I'm generally a very slow editor 8-)

Both.

I'm not bragging. I need to actually tell a story in my AMVs so that it makes sense. I'm against random clips in random order. However, if it's for a fighting sequence montage, it would be necessary. I made an AMV to "The One" by Backstreet boys (yes, I said it, BACKSTREET BOYS) because it fit perfectly with Eureka Seven. And I mean PERFECTLY. If I could upload it I would, but I use my school's comp to make my vids. My home computer is crap and can't connect to internet.
Almost as hard as fighting a Holy Paladin.

Meh when i plan out it turns out into crap usually when i don't.. well keeping it simple.... then i guess more chaos engine but a drop of story /mood is nice too.
Still better than that MMO.
