Actually, it's a mixture of both for me. I spend LOTS of time planning and lots of time watching as I build the video. I do use a realtime editing card so I get real time preview for the rough verson. Then after a tracks, effects, titles, etc, the evil render key becomes my best friend (or worst nightmare!)
