Re: Releasing AMVs before a contest?
Generally, if I make a video specifically for a con then I wait until that con is over before I release that video. I then release the video and well any other cons that I send that video to will show the video after it's been released. Really, as long as releasing it doesn't break the contests rules I don't really care that much. I just prefer the video to be up as soon as possible after the con so that those who saw it at the con can easily get the vid after they get back.

Re: Releasing AMVs before a contest?
This is exactly how I feel. I like giving the con attendees something special. If it's been online for awhile and everyone's already seen it...who the hell wants to see the same thing again that they already saw? For that reason I usually aim my video releases immediately after a con they 'premiere' at since hopefully the folks who saw it there are looking for it.Vlad G Pohnert wrote:I wait till after as I want the videos at a contest to be as big of a suprise as possible.. You really need someone to answer that? I don't think most people make AMVs to be 'popular' among like 100 people. Most of us do it as a creative outlet and to get ideas out. What...you don't?Scintilla wrote:Pray tell, how is it any worse than AMVs for any other reason?dragontamer5788 wrote:Oh... and amvs for popularity == bad.

I didn't ask whether most people did it or not; I asked how it was a bad thing. I feel that it's none of my business what reasons someone has for making videos as long as they're having fun and not hurting anyone in the end.dwchang wrote:You really need someone to answer that? I mean, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who thrive on competition and the quest for popularity (even if they don't end up getting there (and I'm sure there are also those that actually get a kick out of "the drama associated with popularity contests")), even if they don't find the editing process itself that great. And if by chance that results in some really good AMVs, so much the better.
That said, I did enjoy dragontamer5788's response. I suppose I'd never really considered the possibility that somebody who was determined to become famous in the AMV world might actually NOT succeed in that.

You guys really took this way too far, hahaScintilla wrote:I mean, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who thrive on competition and the quest for popularity (even if they don't end up getting there (and I'm sure there are also those that actually get a kick out of "the drama associated with popularity contests")), even if they don't find the editing process itself that great. I think editing is a labour of love, and most people wouldn't go through it if they didn't love the anime and the music like we do.
HOWEVER, like Scintilla said, there are some people who thrive on the competition and popularity that comes with it. I would go further and say that this desire for popularity is a small inspiration for us all.
My proof? The existence of this website. The reason we're all on here in the first place is that we want to share our videos with the world. In the purest sense of the word 'love', if we all made AMVs just for the love of making AMVs we wouldn't need the .org here, so clearly we all want our videos to be watched and critiqued by other people so we can improve our future editing endeavours, and also so we can receive some acknowledgment that what we are doing has meaning beyond ourselves.
(But that's all heavy and philosophical and if I go on I could end up in some existential quandary so I'm not going there. Not unless you guys are ready with some super soakers.)
Anyway. Back on topic... I normally keep my AMVs under wraps, but in the case of a movie trailer I feel like I could kind of ride the popularity wave of this particular movie being released and get more attention for the AMV with very little work done

well, I think if a trialer is good it does not have to be realses right away.. I mean the trilaer I made was relasesed one year after the movie and it still was popular with people....

I usually wait for a con premiere, but I've had some "straight to download" videos that have been successful as well.

Correct. People were laughing at "The Narutix" for a long while.dazza1008 wrote:I'd say focus on the con. To me, it doesn't really matter if the movie is released before your trailer. I enjoy trailers from years back. *shrug*

Re: Releasing AMVs before a contest?
I think its not important if you release it befor a con or not. Because if there are some people which saw it befor can also say cool or they dont like it. if they see the video at the con some people can search the video. And if it is a video for a contest, look into the rules, i saw sometimes that you are not allowed to release it befor the con, if you do you get kicked out of the contest.
When the video is only shown or there is nothing against the prerelease, then it is your choice.

Re: Releasing AMVs before a contest?
releasing a video competing in a con is a risky move (I mean... if you want to win and stuff) as it gives the judges/ audience a head start on finding flaws in your video. Not many videos are just as fun the 10th time you've watched it as the first. Also it may tip off the competition as to what works for you and stuff.
Then again if you don't care about this stuff (and it's not against con rules ie anime usa) than go ahaed!
