I love new videos, though too many seem like they were made by Stuart Larkin.

Use effects when necessary, not to just show off what you can do.

Use more mood sync and have less focus on lyrical sync and lip sync.

Lyrical sync is not impressive and lip sync is not impressive. Do some good damn mood sync that is actually done well, and that would be impressive.

Everyone wants have the next 5 star visual effects video or the next 5 star lip sync video.

Honestly, the issue is simply glut. As the hobby becomes more and more and more accessible (which it does, with each passing day), there will be more and more videos of crap to middling quality. Many of these will appear, superficially, to be old school, but you will quickly see that they are just poorly executed, and the simplicity is not intentional (As opposed to those of us like myself or Daniel, who choose simplicity in execution for stylistic purposes, because that's what we like to make), but rather the reality of the lack of skill by these new editors. This serves to suppress simple videos with, I think Savia said it best, class, both because it serves as prohibition against established editors trying simplicity as a style, and also helps hide even those simplistic videos with class. Following that, heavy effects videos just stand out more and more each day, because it is harder to wade through romances and dramas and sentimental and find those that really are edited well.

What's next? Same old, same old. Even us some of us veterans work hard to bring people into the fold and make editing easier, we have to understand that means that we have a finite number of veterans at the top with a constantly increasing stream of newbies. That means I fully expect the situation I described above to continue exponentially. The forums and IRC channel tend to temper this in some way, however. If not for Inner Circle, I think the situation would seem even more omnipresent than it is now.

If you don't D\L as many amvs as you used, I'd say it's more likely that you've gotten more cynical, not necessarily that amvs have gotten worse. As a fairly recent editor, I see nothing wrong with new amvs compared to old ones, except that the difference between old-school no effect vids and most new no effect vids are as kinion said. It used to be the limit of the hobby, and thus people prefected it. Now it's seen as the first stepping stone. I'd still say there's a decent number of editors that make classy no effect videos. Iliea, Rider4Z, and (from what I've seen) kevmaster to name a few.

Perhaps someday after the concept of sync has been beaten to death, we'll abandon it completely and focus on mood and audio editing. I think it'd be interesting to make a video first, and then edit the music to match.

I think Kionon is on the mark.

In the beginning making them was not easy. So logically there were fewer.
Anime was also not widespread, so fewer people gave a damn about fussing with anime.
Technology was also different. Less access to resources.

Then the glut.
Anime had a rapid explosion so too did amvs I guess.
Several factors connected to tech appeared. Made the process easier to make and share.

But eventually saturation point arrives.

I've browsed a great deal of amvs. I have like about 6 dvds crammed with things I have found that I liked enough to store a copy.
But I ran out of old stuff to browse.
I still find the occasional great creation.
But I KNOW the search will take longer now.

Amvs have not evolved per se, we've reached a plateau is what has happened.
