Grind levels of editor until you're just high enough to pull it off, but not high enough to retire.

I've been putting off on a vid for over a year and a half now that involves a skill set I don't ever envision having (creating my own 3d animation) - and i'm honestly thinking of pitching it to someone that does have that skill set, so it doesn't die.

Well, waiting for a long time until your skills have got better might actually kill your motivation to start working on that old idea of yours. Or it could not. Depends how much you really want to get that video done.

You can also put perfectionism aside for a moment and just edit, even if you think it's coming along pretty badly. It's useful practice nevertheless. And you can always remake the video if you feel like it. Also, you can just patiently work and work on it until the result looks completely different from the first draft :P

Well anyway, don't let the high standards stop your from editing

That's a good idea. =D

And that's what happens to me most of the time. >_> I've saved projects I've edited less than a second which I hate already. I keep them for around a month or two, then just throw them away because I don't even like the idea anymore.

Phase 1: Fake it as best you can, and go for a parody of the original concept. Then drink heavily until its actually funny.

Phase 2: .......

Phase 3: Profit
