I disagree, what qualifies as a "really good" video differs from one person to the next, so that alone is a discrepancy. But what if someone wants to use a different anime? Or if two people have the same taste in music. Even sometimes the same anime can be used two different ways to the same song and both come out as a good video.
The only person to use "The Becomming" has been shane. Thats because, to this date, there really isnt a better concept for that song. It is THE definitive video with that song. No one elsle can do another one. I'll just think of Shane's when I hear the song.
I think the same rule goes for obscure songs like The Deluxe War Baby by the Burning Airlines. No one had even heard this song before Kwasek's video came out. Its an awesome video, and the perfect concept for the song, and now nobody can use it. Its been done already. Seriously what the hell could you do with that song besides Trigun? Its not like someone had an idea for that song and Kwasek just happend to do a different one. You saw Kwasek's video, said "omg I love this song", and decided to make a video to it. Thats not original at all.
And then there are exceptions. Closer by Nine Inch Nails has been used way to many times but alot of good videos have been made with it. Its an easy song to apply to anime as it can be all metaphor or hawt shinji man sex or eating robot pussy or whatever. Another exception would be using the song in a parody or comedy situation. One of my ideas that I plan on doing one day is a spoof on all the incredibly serious Closer videos using Closer with Sailor Moon. I think that would be ok since the concept is on the complete other end of the spectrom. Another example would be your song has been used but in a terrible way. You have to jusdge the circumstances. Example: I go to look on the org to see if my song has been taken. I see that it has. I click the link and see an 8 megabyte real media file by a completely unknown person saying "this is my first video and I thought it came out really really cooo and i really like it and i think its great blah blah blah blah". I close the window and don't even consider the song used. Call me jaded but thats the way it is most of the time. If you see a new video on the org, chances are it is horrible. If some unknown person comes out with an awesome video people almost always go into shock and celebration. Spectacular Anime for example. That video was the talk of the virtual town for about a month. But if you see a video by someone you've never heard of before, chances are its terrible and the song is still fair game.
But when I say "really good video" I mean "THE Definitive Video". It doesn't have to be good, in fact your personal oppinion is irrelevent. It just has to be well known and popular. Your judgement of how popular a video is, has a direct relation with how close your finger is to the pulse of the video sub culture. If you poke your head in once a week or so, you will have a much less accurate sense than someone who spends 5-8 hours a day on the org.
I think the videos I listed are off limits either that the definitive video has been made with them or it uses an obscure song.
