Well, quack_moo up there says it was for a contest. I see no reason to disbelieve him.
I don't know that I wasn't given credit, but it can be assumed that if an AMV is submitted for a contest, that credit is attributed to the person who entered the AMV.
If they gave credit, that's cool. I like that a bunch of people saw my AMV at a con. I never expected anything like that.
If they didn't, they stoled it.
And as for accusations of wrongdoing, regardless of what actually happened, my AMV was used without my notification. Someone who's just entering it for the hell of it might inform the creator. When something I create is used by someone else without my knowledge, it can be assumed that said person didn't care for me to know. And if they didn't care for me to know, then they probably are being malicious in some way.
While I see where you're coming from, it is perfectly understandable for me to be moderately concerned that my AMV was used without my knowledge in an AMV contest. =\

Actually, I completely disagree.DoomDragon6 wrote: While I see where you're coming from, it is perfectly understandable for me to be moderately concerned that my AMV was used without my knowledge in an AMV contest. =\
I don't think an AMV editor should try to control propagation of their work, mostly because (1) they almost always have no legal right to do so and (2) there's something very bizarre, indeed hypocritical, about insisting on control that -- extended all the way up the chain -- would have made it much harder for you to make your AMV in the first place.
But that's beside the point. If you're interested in my fringe lunatic views, PM me.
At this point, I just hope the email you sent was polite and inquiring, not inflammatory and/or accusatory.

Well of course I'm not going to send an accusational e-mail to someone who had nothing to do with the AMV.
I would like to find the person that used it though, and talk to him/her as well.
It's not like I'm hopping up and down, shouting that this person is a sack of crap that stole my AMV.
I'm just saying that it's reasonable that, in a world where people can claim credit for AMVs (because, well, we do. I understand that we're using something other people made to make something ourselves, and really we have no legal protection of any sort-- but if nobody gave a damn about who made AMVs, this site really wouldn't exist.), that someone can be concerned about their work being used without their knowledge for a contest.
While I myself am ecstatic that such a thing happened, it's still disconcerting that someone did that.
But then, that's why I created this thread-- to see what you other artists think.
I'm actually surprised. I figured that more of you would be angry if something like that happened. =p

Cool; just making sure. (I mean, you can't be sure of much on the Internet.)DoomDragon6 wrote:Well of course I'm not going to send an accusational e-mail to someone who had nothing to do with the AMV.
The first post in this thread deceived me, then. It's good to hear that, in reality, things are more balanced. It's not like I'm hopping up and down, shouting that this person is a sack of crap that stole my AMV.
I think they're the silent majority. I'm the idiot evangelist.I'm actually surprised. I figured that more of you would be angry if something like that happened. =p

Didn't someone from Kei-con come here just earlier looking for videos to play/information on videos? I could swear that happened. Seemed a little odd since contests take submissions rather than just play videos...

That seems to be the case, Otohiko.
I got a response from the AMV coordinator at Kei-Kon.
"I apologize if you have been worried or made to feel stressful about this. I spoke with some of my AMV staff and they explained to me that several videos were chosen to beef up some of our categories, as we are a diminutive convention, and yours was one of them, chosen due to merit and the staff's personal enjoyment.
There was no credit claimed on your behalf; the video earned its own acclaim.
And speaking of such acclaim, I'd like to inform you that your video placed first in our Dance category, placing above several other very fine videos.
I understand that this issue may have brought you some stress, and to that I deeply and sincerely apologize, but I hope the recognition of your excellent work is some comfort.
Thank you for your time. If you were interested in submitting AMV's for our convention next year, this time with your knowledge, we would relish the chance to see a repeat performance of your work."
So apparently they did just come around to find some AMVs to use. And my AMV came in first in the Dance category.
So, knowing that no-one was trying to take credit for it, that's actually a lot cooler. =p[/i]

Actually I find the more "tubey" the crowd is the more angsty they get about "stolen" amv work... and most of the people around here (on the forums at least) want nothing to do with it.
I've had a couple cons use my videos without permission, but for the most part they weren't in contests or anything O.o and hey if they want to spread my misery around I guess let them?
Though it's odd that they would enter it into a contest without asking first O.o I guess its not completely unheard of.. I suppose.
Anyways glad you got it all figured out.

There's a nice thread here about watermarking amvs.
If I might summarize the popular viewpoint.
"Get over it", you never owned anything in it in the first place in all likelihood. Be glad your work is good enough to steal, and not being rated as a 1 and called worthless crap on a-m-v.org

It is actually not theft
At the Kei Con there is a "contest" where they show some AMV that were found on the web (not actually made by the people at the con) and then everyone votes for their faves. How do I know this? I was there yesterday.
