I think it more depends on the quality of the content... If an anime is popular but doesn't have much quality or artwork then it wont fair off as well as one that isn't very popular and has extremely beautiful artwork / internal FX. Gotta keep in mind that some people just want to see new stuff done differently. IF they see an anime in an AMV that they haven't watched... They might rate it higher simply cause its new to them, in most cases new stuff is more interesting.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

If I use Naruto and Linkin Park, I have an advantage of over 9000.

It's difficult to keep things original with a popular anime. A lot of ideas will already have been done before. And it's also hard to get people to rate it based on your editing and how good the AMV is as an AMV instead of "I love FMA! This video is awsm!" just for using FMA.

However, sometimes when a somewhat new/unused anime is introduced, many people will notice the anime, and not really pay attention to your video itself.

So there's always a downside to one or the other, so just go with what you want. Go with what works for you. If you want to make a Naruto video, go ahead. But be prepared to have people nagging at you about being unoriginal and using an overused anime. Or make a Kikoshi Enma video, and have people complaining about not know what's going on, since they've never even heard of it before.

I agree with what Ileia said and what Ojamajo_LimePie said

both have their downsides though...

what's best is to make the ideas you want to make and not worry about popularity, just have fun with it

It'd only really matter come contest time, right? Other than that, what would be the point in picking one based on the size of the fanbace?
"Its 16kg, 39cm and holds 6+1 13mm rounds, each shell is made from a baptized linkin park album and the casings are pure Konoha head-bands. No freak fanboy could eat these and come back for more"

popular or not. If the video is good it makes no sense if the anime/song is often used. Ok i cant see Naruto at the moment but ok... It is also, that i dont like the anime/manga...

Ah, Hold Me Now, my favorite of all time - and now Princess Tutu's one of my favorites as well. ^_^

If you use a popular series/movie/whatever in a way everyone's seen 3 million times, I suspect in competition and here it would wind up being more popular than an unfamiliar series given the exact same treatment.

However, I'd be just as happy to watch popular anime in a unique AMV as unpopular anime in a unique AMV...for me it comes down to what the editor brings to the table, not where the footage actually came from. Everyone's starting on the same page when it comes to using a certain source material, after all, it's what we do with it that we (should) wind up evaluating.

I confess it's easier for me to gives extra props to editors who use ridiculously popular (i.e. overused) anime in ways no one else has, and up against unpopular anime also used in a unique way...it would be a close call, but I probably would lean towards the unique treatment of the popular anime as being better. Just seems more daring, though the use of unpopular anime is daring in and of itself, soo....thank goodness all other things are rarely equal!
