A great song? No. A tolerable one? Definitely.

Comedy is the exception to this rule.

What's a great song?

You mean a song that I like?

No, not really. It's more likely, though, that I'll be drawn to an AMV in the first place by a song I already know and like, and I may understand an AMV better if it uses a song that is well within my range-of-liking, but it's not at all a requirement.

A great AMV is more than the sum of its parts, that's all really.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

...What one person thinks is an awesome song the next person will think is one of the worst songs they've ever heard.. therefore Your question is void..

but yah.. I've seen a couple AMVs with songs I just hate that were awesome.. or Alternatively, AMVs with songs that I Just LOVE.. but are edited horribly. as for my judgement of the actual AMV.. whether I like the song or not does not influence.. Song choice, however, does.. Is the song appropraite for what you're trying to convey?.. yes? well then  for you.

No. A great AMV must be made by someone in CDVV

What can I say?

We're Great.

I think a great song is required to make a bad to average AMV enjoyable. Maybe even decent. But if the AMV itself is well done, while a "good song" would definately help it, a "bad song" shouldn't take away from it.

X2.

No, wait, I mean, yes it has to have a great song. A good amv with a god awful song means I'll never watch it. A bad amv with a good song means I just looped it for the 43 time.

CDVV has good taste in music.

I enjoy the amv more if I enjoy the song. While I enjoy many different kinds of songs, and it is possible for me to enjoy an amv to a song I otherwise wouldn't enjoy, in general, songs I like make amvs more enjoyable for me than songs I don't.

No. Skittles. Lets just be super cute girls. Lots of AD videos, NTB. These are fairly well known videos, yet if you were to listen to the songs by them selves, chances are you wouldn't give them a second chance. Editing CAN make a great video.

But i like music more then anime, so imo if i don't like the song, i can say it's a good video, but i won't really like it.

A good song is subjective. I don't like Jewel, but someone else might. However, I love "Standing Still" because whenever I hear it, I think of kurt's Pop Up Excel Video.

A great song can beget a bad video, and a bad song can still have a great video edited to it. It doesn't matter whether a song or anime is good or not, what makes an AMV good is the conjunction of the two sources, the ability of the editor, and the preferences of the audience.

For instance, I love MarquesMan's Naota's Dad Wants A Woman, using FLCL to Queens of the Stone Age - Quick And To The Pointless. Download it yourself and see if you see the same thing I do.
