Does anyone here (amv makers) do work for MTV?

Welcome to corporate pop-culture. It's not what you know, it's a combination of who you know, who you'll sleep with, and how physically attractive you are. Actual skill might be in the consideration process somewhere, but it's not that high up there as a requirement.

x2. If you know the head of a company and you don't really know what you're doing. and you're going up against somebody who doesn't know anybody in the company but has tons of experience. Chances are they'll hire you instead of the other guy. If they're... smart or nice, Idk whatever. they may hire both just to be nice. but Good luck finding something like that.

To add on to that, if I may, back in the day, MTV stood for "Music Television" Now it stands for "As long as there is some music in our crapality shows, it's music television with a hint of actual music videos." Too bad they hardly ever have good music on there anyway

AMVs are designed as someone's artistic expression.

Real music videos are designed to make an artist look cool so that people will buy a song.

There are some music videos out there that are very very good. In fact, recently I have been watching real music videos a lot more than I watch amvs. Most of them just have no soul though.... but the same could be said of all the Naruto Park Z vids out there.

look up stuff directed by Michele Gondry (his movies too) or Chris Cunningham (i probably misspelled something there) either way they are two of my favorite music video directors... good stuff imho

there are bands that are asking fans to make their "official" music video. ozzy, red hot chili peppers, korn to name ones i've heard.

Beowulf answered this, I think. It's mostly time.

I have many dvds from several major music groups like Rush, Abba, Queen, etc, and usually, the best stuff is just video of concerts. The videos you see on places like MTV, its all shit.

Conversely, I've seen a bunch of "official" music videos that I think absolutely destroy many AMVs. Here's a few examples; you can probably find them on YouTube:

- any video by Michel Gondry (esp. his videos for the Chemical Brothers' "Star Guitar" and "Let Forever Be")
- Olivier Gondry's video for Lacquer - Behind
- F5's video to Royksopp's "Remind Me', using Somebody Else's Radio Mix
- Alex Rutterford's video to Autechre's "Gantz Graf"
- the video to Asobi Seksu's "Goodbye" (sorry, I don't know the artist behind that one)

Pick up a copy of motion blur:onedotzero sometime and flip through it. There's a ton of beautiful professional work out there, and I bet it's just drowned out by the larger amount of crap.

I don't think your question was "why do so-called pros make such garbage", but I think it's important to point out that, well, they don't. Not always.

I recall seeing several amvs using Enya's song Gravity of Love, and some of them are superior. And then you see the ACTUAL video Enya had on tv, and you think, gee I hope she didn't pay to much for that crap.

"Gravity of Love" is by Enigma, not Enya.

I should mention, I'm old, and as such, a great deal of music made in the last 20 years will be either unknown to me, or I will hate it (Or maybe both I just don't know it yet).

Example, Korn, well I know the name, I have a young buddy that liked them, I've seen posters on his wall. I will turn off an amv the moment I realize, hey this is Korn. Cheque please. God I hate their music.

Yes, I realize some of the music of my youth sucked too

And anytime the music begins with swearing in about the first 5 seconds, click. I only listen to music that is positive, uplifting, certainly not angry hostile mean spirited stuff, no video can make that interesting.

Anyway, I will try to check out some of the names mentioned if I can, and see what their mainstream stuff looks like.

I recall when Thriller was released. It was boring.
