Have you ever purchased a song or anime based on an AMV?

Yes.

I purchased Kino's Journey at Otakon literally a day after I saw Walter Scott's Kinocycle AMV in the contest. I enjoyed it immensely.

...it also helped that he used a Radiohead song

A lot of the obscure titles I own I purchased specifically for AMVs. I tend to buy a lot of music because I heard it in a video and liked it. I usually netflix a series I see and am intrigued about from an AMV before buying it.
