Naruto has become pretty much hated in the community, by 2 sorts of people, for a few different reasons.
I'll start with the retards. Many people don't like Naruto, on the org at the very least, because of the retards it entails. The frequent action scenes and mainstream appeal of the series make it a true noob magnet, and usually not the smart kind. These people discover this site, and then make very bad AMV's. There are alot of these people, and thus alot of these kind of AMV's. This has frustrated many org users who feel they have to filter through this crap to find good AMV's, when if the series didn't exist, they wouldn't have to deal with the problem. Thus, alot of the hate for Naruto has less to do with the quality of the series, and more to do with the quality of it's fans. However, alot of people have assumed that the series IS relevant to it's fanbase quality, and they have joined in on the hate as well. Which makes them retards, because the series has undeniable qualities, such as amazing intensity during the battles, a fascinating attention for detail, and characters from basically all over the psychological map, whose backrounds are often times fully exposed for one's analysis.
I do think that every epic will always be hated by some, who have the right to do so. To truly become a fan of the series and grasp what it is that makes Naruto so popular, one must be willing to watch at least a few episodes, and from the very beginning, no less. Many have watched AMV's using the series, even good ones, and decided it wasn't for them, which I find to be a big mistake, as there's really something about it that cannot be resumed in 4 minutes. On the other hand, it is much easier for a Naruto fan to love a Naruto AMV, simply because all he has to do is listen to the music, and play back memories in his mind if he wants to. This explains the large number of Naruto vids in the top 10 percent, another fact that has created alot of Naruto hate, AMV fans feeling they don't deserve to be there, and aren't judged by the mainstream on their merits alone. Which, more often than not, is true.
To answer your question specifically (And I'm sorry it took that much time ^^), Naruto has just come out of a large filler period (Something like 20 months) of absolutely horrible quality, storyline and animation alike, that has done nothing to improve the series's image. Most of the good editors who liked Naruto, having no more decent material, simply stopped making Naruto vids, and when the community realized this, it simply started ignoring all Naruto vids, instantly dismissing them at the sight of the anime title. That started in late 2005, and in 2006, everybody decent knew that Naruto was hostile territory, and nobody felt like putting effort into a vid that might ultimately be ignored because the editor's reputation was not strong enough to make the org forget it was Naruto.
However, with the start of Shippuden, things will change, so be patient if you want to see some good stuff
Sorry for writing so much, but thanks for the outlet. I'm surely not the most qualified to talk about the subject, but I'd been meaning to express my frustration at the Naruto hate, especially with Shippuden gettng stronger every episode, after a slow start
