Remember, the submissions that people make (people who care about winning anyway) are on a whole different level than the files that are on distribution for the .org. Try taking a look at the submission requirements for a well known Con like Awa, or AX.

As for sound, PA quality sound is generally pretty harsh on the ears. It's not really geared around music reproduction. It would be like going to a club, and finding out that they put up a whole bunch of computer speakers. If you talk to a rental agency, and tell them that you're setting up a movie theater for X-number of people in X-size room they should be able to give you the equipment specs that you need.

Plan on it being way more expensive than you want it to be.

Actually, from our initial research on audio equipment, it's not really going to cost us an arm and a leg for very good quality stuff and I'm fairly certain I can squeeze quite a bit of money from the committee if I tell them the equipment has further use for other events like Anime Idol and Karaoke

Having contacts in the DJing business helps.

It's about time I go at it head to head with the treasurer again, mesa thinks :P

What, Karaoke deserves the good shit but AMVs don't? Kick them in head for me please. Repeatedly.

If you win this and get the audio system you want you may want to consider flat out requiring high audio quality in the rules. One acceptable response to 'but all AMVs are 128k' is 'and if they are they don't get in the contest'.

Hehe... yeah, I'm actually conducting this survey on more forums than just here. I am actually quite disappointed with the response to my thread, but I'm not overly fussed about it. In about 3 weeks time when the committee reconvenes, I will have gathered enough data from a lot of the major Australian online forums that are into AMVs and also the best possible prices and possibly even show to them some videos around here (not just the ones people make for competitions but even just the stuff they upload) are made with audio quality greater than the disappointments they seem to have exposed themselves to...
