I second that. I've have had vids that are worth something because people enjoy the story and deep meanings that are in the video. Heck there are some sensless comedy videos out there that don't have special effects. Special Effects only can enhance your video if used the right way. If you over use it or don't properly use them then they don't really mean anything.trythil wrote:Special effects don't mean a goddamn thing.
Seriously.

Then all mine suck. Except Pentaxial, there were like...14 layers at points in there...bum wrote:if your video has less than 5 tracks worth of effects in any scene then it sucks.

I only use effects if I feel the song warrants them. I LIKE effects but I'm too lazy to use them, most of the time. Working on a semi-effect driven video right now that's making me tear my hair out (good think I shaved my head the other day). But the song warrants them....

Life's short.

Being "worth something" implies "to whom and for what". If you're entering a contest with a video that has no effects, you're competing with a significant handicap. Especially if it's an audience vote. This is true more often than not.ashiteruSweetSurrender wrote:I have WMM2 and I was just wondering if an AMV can still be worth something even though it doesn't have special effects...
You can get SFX for WMM2 from Pixelan. But if you're going to spend that kind of money (it's not much), why not spend $80 on Premiere Elements or Vegas Movie Studio (or some others) and get a better editing program with a large number of effects already built-in?...you know the stuff this program lacks... It's kind of making me want to wait till i get a better program...
Do what you want to do. Basically, you're asking if people will like your vids, and that's not really relevant - unless you're out to win a competition. In which case, see above....but i don't want to wait... but I don't want my ideas to be wasted.. what would you do?
*******
I'm starting to think that we should make anyone who starts a thread like this define what he or she means by "special effect". Is it this, or is it that? Is it the tool, or the technique...or just the visual end product?
We get a bunch of replies and I'm never sure if everyone is talking about the same topic. Floaty rectangles are one thing, but what about crossfades and overlays? What I'm working on now has overlays all over it, but no one will notice (if I do them right). Does that mean I'm making an "effects video"?
In fact, you could do some "special effects" with simple cuts if you chose the right footage. (Try cutting a clip into 3-frame blocks that you randomly re-arrange on the timeline.)
