File naming convention

I usually don't rename files, but in a few cases I have. What I usually do to handle this problem is create folders based on a loose genre of AMVs. The the ones I can't sort go into the main folder. This makes it easier to find videos when often I don't remember the filenames. Then once every so often I'll find a video and go, oh, what's this, it must be a drama video because it's in the drama folder. Then I rewatch and find out it once was one of my favorites or something.

I like my disorganization (my parents never believe me though).

I don't really see a need for an enforced naming system. If a file I'm downloading has an especially long filename, I'll whittle it down a bit, or on rarer occasions I'll just rename it entirely (if the original filename isn't descriptive of the video, but rather a random string of letters or such). As you said, you'll never be able to have a standard that will make everyone happy, so I'd be inclined to think the current system is the best compromise we can achieve.
As for the question, I just name mine "AquaSky-Title.mpg". Short and to the point, yet still gives enough information (hopefully) that whoever downloaded it would be able to tell in the future which video it's describing.

i bother to do this with every video i keep and its how i remember videos anyways.

i don't use $creator i have too many "singles" from various creators to be able to associate every video with their creator's name. if i need to find the creator's name, most videos have credits with the creator's name or studio.

My personal convention, which I don't think I've yet seen anyone else use:

No studio:
creator - anime - songArtist - songTitle [or videoTitle]

Studio:
studioName - anime - songArtist - songTitle [or videoTitle]

Multi-editor studio, or one whose member(s) I wouldn't remember otherwise:
studioName (creator) - anime - songArtist - songTitle [or videoTitle]

I usually don't use videoTitle unless it's close enough to songTitle that I'll know what the song is, or it's one of those videos where no one really cares/remembers what the song is anyway because of the nature of the video.

(this one tends to be my preferred format)

or

-=Title=- (Music Artist - Song, by Otohiko).avi

(where x is part, for my embarassingly-ongoing single-editor project of stupid crap)

The first 100 or so amvs I downloaded were renamed:

H:\AMVs\$studio\$artist _ $song - $title

It made it extremely easy to find a video I wanted in winamp's media library search feature; however, renaming the files and creating folders for each studio became a chore so I stopped doing it...

My typical naming convention is

$creator - $title [$other - any other random crap I decide to throw on the end

]

for example:

Qyöt27 - The Nights Will See Them Through [DS5]*

*Where 'DS5' stands for 'The Dreamscape, Part 5'

Of course, this is only for my own videos (on my HD, though, it gets more confusing, because the only ones that are like that are the masters; there's a 'distro' stuck on the end of the ones I upload to the Donut, even if the downloadable copy doesn't have it on the filename).

I usually keep other creators' filenames the same, cause I usually have a good memory about that kind of thing, and I don't keep many videos on my HD at one time for space reasons (but I do have a good 50-some zipped archive CD-Rs full of 'em and other various types of video). The only exceptions are any of the videos that are on Direct now, since those now register as 'download.php.avi' or some crap like that when the save dialog box comes up

as far as enforcing something, i think a suggested format for uploading, that has creator, anime, song, something im forgetting maybe, but i always rename the video to what the song is. rarely do i find something that has more than one song that i like, but in that instance, i just keep the creators title. i just have one folder full of song names, but some subfolders if i have a bunch of video's with that anime, that i really enjoyed the series, and it hasnt been combined with every other anime. this is a really effective system for me at least, since i just like to see the song animated, and not some image of the singer, which is why i love amvs so much. a bit off topic, but im bored.

My naming convention is pretty impersonal (anime) artist - song title. I never though of giving credit to the creators, myself inclued. So sad to say, even something as unique as Alternate Eva Opening: Eva Bebop becomes simply (Evangelion) Yoko Kanno - Tank! when I get my hands on it. I've started changing this convention though, however, I'm not quite sure what I'll replace it with.
