In defense of my "doing sometihng original is easy" statement, I could make an amv done to 3 minutes of me farting (I'd have to edit it together of course, there's no way I could record that one live ;p )
But yes, I understand that it was a good way to talk about the problems of originality which are numerous ^_^;;

Anyway... I just quoted you because yours was the last post, but I was speaking more generally to everybody who posted in this thread. Sorry if it looked like a "personal matter": it wasn't intended to ^^;
Again, with my crappy english

You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Credit the fact that I watch very few AMVs for my ignorance of this. I was commenting more on the visual presentation and style which I haven't seen before - except possibly in Odorikuruu. Visual presentation is what I focus on these days, and that may be my personal blind spot in any discussion of AMV-originality.AbsoluteDestiny wrote: It's quite ironic that you mention Shameless Rock in this context, given that practically every section was stolen from amvs or media I'd seen before. It's very very referential. Maybe it's different because it takes from lots of different places. *shrugs*
I agree with the idea of doing what you want regardless of what you see. There are so many AMVs now, you'll never know for sure if your original idea is really original. So, why worry about it?
BTW, my earlier comment about breaking the rules was meant for consensus-rules regarding the making of AMVs. Contest rules should not be broken - except by contest organizers.

On the topic of what constitutes "original", for me the "best" kind of originality is not about the editing/presentation OR the obscurity of the song or anime (obscurity != originality, not to mention quality - a common misconception).
It's the concept itself, for me. How the combination of sound, lyric (if any), and visuals throw a new light onto, or inject a new energy into, a series, theme, plot, or character. If I come away thinking "Wow, I never thought of it that way," I am most impressed.
Maybe that's pretentious, I don't know. I like being made to think.
It's the same way I approach any fanwork.

You want something fresh?
Do an AMV to John Cage's 4'33". I'd love to do that myself, but I've got a Metropolis project to finish.
There are a few problems that arise, however:
1) You have practically unlimited freedom with 4'33", and that, in some ways, is a bad thing. You never know what kind of coherence you might be able or not be able to pull together in that kind of situation.
2) 4'33" was never meant to be heard as a recording. Or at least Cage said so.
3) The public will eat you alive. (Though I suppose this isn't really much of a concern.)
(No, this is not a joke. 4'33" is actually quite deep, despite what it sounds like.)

Sorry, I've already done a music video to that on April Fool's Day.

To fit in with Cage's theory that you are listening to what is going on around you, in this video you are watching what is round you including the reflections in your monitor

Heh. It would be funnier if it didn't make Xine's demuxer crash -- I suppose I'll have to report this video to Guenter Bartsch.
Dangit, though. That was one of the only (non-vulgar) really "original" ideas I thought I had. Guess I'll have to reach back further into music esoterica -- how about one to Antheil and Leger's (I think that's right) 1925 Ballet Mechanique? That's sure to grate (ha ha) a few people.

I think your theory is ok, but there is more to it than that.SarahtheBoring wrote:...guess my theory that "obscure does not automatically mean deep, important, or original" really didn't go over well.
Ah well, it's to be expected. People are always happy if they know entertainment that "few" people know. Makes them feel special and important...
If someone says an AMV is "original", it's appropriate to ask him, "In what way?" For example, a love story AMV is not by itself original. A love story AMV using Oh My Goddess! is also not original; been done before. A love story AMV using Cosmo Warrior Zero is original in the sense that one has never been done before (at least I don't think it has). But it may not be original in concept, theme, execution, etc.
