I use mine sparingly. The last time I used mine was to download the Earth and Beyond five day 1gig demo...

As an alternative I know of at least two FTP programs that can catch and download from http URLs. Bulletproof FTP ($) and Leech FTP (freeware).

Properly set up, they don't open up multiple streams, but will resume a download that times out.

Important note about Leech: you must set the number of threads to 1, or it will try to download multiple queued files concurrently.

The only drawback is that they sometimes have trouble with really complex URLs or server setups, in which case I just download with IE.

If that fails, I pull out my final weapon, ReGet Junior ($), which integrates with IE pretty well, and has almost never failed me. It doesn't seem to open multiple connections, but it does appear to segment downloads, so I avoid using it as much as possible.

Beyond LeechFTP, I don't actually know of any download managers/resumers that are both free of cost AND spyware. :?

For FTP sites, I use any FTP client that can resume downloads. My preferences are Filezilla in Windows, and lftp and gftp in Linux.

filezilla: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
lftp: http://lftp.yar.ru/
gftp: http://www.gftp.org/

I used to use Netvampire 3.3 (http://www.netvampire.com/) but it was crash-city after I switched to WinXP. I now use the Windows version of wget (http://wget.sunsite.dk/).

Wget doesn't work on a-m-v.org direct links. However, it's available for (and scriptable on) both Linux and Windows, and it's great for everything else.

There are also good HTTP download managers for Linux.

I either use Demon Download or nothing. Demon Download is nice because I can pause my sessions and schedual downloads with a begin time on whatever day.
