Re: we should make some Org propaganda
How about if we make promo material that only follows safe themes? (that aren't necessarily related to the new site)
Like you show a funny clip; let the joke settle; then say: "Looking for Comedy? ...Go to the .Org" (Or do it for Action, Drama etc...)
Then submit them to a pool, where the best ones get used as official promo material at conventions and stuff.
I mean, right now the org has... nothing. Which is strange considering we are a community of video editors.
So, I don't think it would hurt to have something already prepared for when the time comes.
As long as people don't start campaigning on other sites until we are ready, it may actually make for a better unveiling.
Plus, it'd be fun.

Re: we should make some Org propaganda
Well, not nothing. There were a handful of Org promo videos made for the first round of Project OrgEditor last year. (such as http://youtu.be/dok9fRNglPI and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEzWZQldtfg) and I'm pretty sure Shin's VCA promo videos count, too. (http://youtu.be/aMlObeZumJQ and http://youtu.be/nZTYeoTmWHY ).Phantasmagoriat wrote:I mean, right now the org has... nothing. Which is strange considering we are a community of video editors.
Anyway, I can't see the harm in starting a few videos to promote the Org for when the redesign is finished, but if we're actively advertising for it too soon, we're just gonna end up with a lot of people having to learn how to use the site twice.

The main complaint I get when I refer someone to the Org is that they don't know how to use the site. Yue has already made a couple "How-To" videos, perhaps our efforts would be better spent helping current confused members and we'll cross the site redesign bridge when we come to it.

i was thinking release on or after the new site is released, not before. i imagine the effort would be lost by people going to check it out and saying "it's still the same".Ileia wrote:I can't see the harm in starting a few videos to promote the Org for when the redesign is finished, but if we're actively advertising for it too soon, we're just gonna end up with a lot of people having to learn how to use the site twice.

i've only seen those videos because i follow the org stuff. Besides linking to people that ask us, how are those supposed to really help as it is? They should be more accessible or publicized somehow if we're actually gonna utilize them. But if the site's actively being redesigned (depending on how long it'll take) wouldn't teaching people how to use the site now still have the problem of lots of people having to learn to use the site twice? We might as well lay low until things change and then start promoting like crazy!

Re: we should make some Org propaganda
The site redesign isn't getting finished tomorrow, we'll still have new members in-between and they'll still need help. I'd rather help teach a handful of users how to use features of the site twice, than campaign for new users and have to try to teach a whole lot more of them. Your posts seem to flip-flop on what you're asking for exactly, I was responding to your original post. Hype for a new site we know next-to-nothing about ourselves? No. Promote when it's done? Yes.

Re: we should make some Org propaganda
And those were awesome, yet none of it seems to be in any sort of official capacity like with the Banners. At some point, I'd be nice to have the org go: "Hey, you want to promote the site? Then show some of these videos at your local anime convention/event"Ileia wrote:Well, not nothing. There were a handful of Org promo videos made for the first round of Project OrgEditor last year.
Of course, you wouldn't want to do that until the new site is up so... if you dwindle it down to two choices:
1. Make promo material now, and hold it back until the time is right
- +you can start making videos right away
+more choices to choose from as official promo when the time comes
+unveiling would be pretty epic
-don't have actual product to look at
-can't trust people to hold back
-possibly generates too much hype
- +no worries about leaking promo material
+promo videos would be more accurate to the real thing
+people would be more excited when the new site is up, generating more turnout
-you have to wait until the new site is up
-may not have enough promo when the time comes
Though it wouldn't hurt to discuss how to deal with promotional material in the future.
I actually think there should be a tag, kind of like Action or Drama, for Promo vids so we can keep track of them. Same with Tutorials.

Re: we should make some Org propaganda
Ive always thought we should wait to actually release, i just didnt specify because i didnt think it would be a big deal if it was released before the new site was up.Ileia wrote:The site redesign isn't getting finished tomorrow, we'll still have new members in-between and they'll still need help. I guess i was wrong, but no matter what i think we should hold off on hype until after its released, youre absolutely right, not flip flopping here.
I mean, you can go help new members, thats not what this post is about though. We can have both efforts at the same time, i would love it if we could help out new members, but the process is conplicated enough that the resources we have (what the heck is ftp) are enough for those users. Any further outreach seems futile with the current system and we have a new system on the horizon. I said "depending on how long it takes" because i have no idea how long its gonna take, forgive me. I didnt know of it was a matter of months r years or DECADES. If it was gonna be months, there would be no point in putting out an organized effort to reach out a explain the new process because therell be a completely new system in only a little bit. If its gonna be years, go ahead, be my guest.
Let me restate my original post.
We should try to publicize the new site when it comes out. Weshould probably wait until its up to actually release things, but should we wait to start making things? Discuss!
Is that better? I wish more things i posted turned out like the hate thread...

Re: we should make some Org propaganda
Yeah, definitely showing at cons would be awesome. I know at least one of the videos I linked had been shown at cons, so there's a willingness there. I recall GQ handing out a-m-v.org business cards, and the NDK gang gave out pamphlets with info on them. Perhaps once the redesign is finished, we can coordinate our efforts across various conventions, and see if we can't get a little screen time for promotion and whatnot.Phantasmagoriat wrote:And those were awesome, yet none of it seems to be in any sort of official capacity like with the Banners. It's up to the AMV editors that attend the con to work with the coordinators to spread the word. It ticks me off when someone asks "where can I find this video?" and the response is to look it up on youtube. Not only is that not helpful to the fans, it's not helpful for the org.
Honestly, one of my favorite promotions to play is http://youtu.be/dok9fRNglPI
It's entertaining and it gets the point across. Plus it gives the audience their chance to make the obligatory "What was the name of that website again? hurr durr derp" joke.
Constant name dropping, referring other unknown editors to the org for future help and nonstop promotion to spread word of the org.
As Ileia said, we used some pamphlets for Nan Desu Kan. Moonlight Soldier helped me whip together a basic sheet of info on editing programs (Premiere, Vegas, and Magix), commonly used AMV terms and easy to fix problems such as interlacing. We handed them out during the Iron Chef and they basically killed any and all "WAT IS BEST EDITING PROGRuM>!?" questions. We put the leftovers on a table in the lobby where people could pick up their badges and pamphlets and they were all basically gone the next day. The staff said people were taking them left and right. On the pamphlets, animemusicvideos.org was the place to go for AMVs.
Mentioning the org once in conversation with other editors that are already on the org does nothing. You've got to work to get it out there. You've got to market it as someplace that's fun and helpful. My next goal is to see if I can get some kind of feature in the program book for Nan Desu Kan. Hell, even if I have to make up ads and print them myself, I'm willing to go the distance.
