For those of you wanting to take a new approach to editing

Post by tyromaniac » Sun Feb 18, 2007 12:13 pm

I was trying to think of what has not yet been done that would be an interesting concept when you watch a video. Then after I thought for quite some time, I came upon this idea.....a 3d video. I'm not talking about making models or using 3d anime, I'm talking about using a classic approach on making pictures look 3d. The pictures with the red and blue outlines. EX: http://www.3djournal.com/001/artic3.php?lgd=0

This is just something I found when searching google.
This would take a long time to edit, but I'm sure the end product would be amazing...assuming you have the 3d glasses :P

Anyone have any comments?

You need two slightly different angles for each frame. Therefore, it won't work with anime.

but of the pictures I've seen, there is only one picture just as the one shown on that web page I pointed out. I still don't see how two pictures would help unless we are not talking about using 3d glasses.....?

That's not just one picture; it's two different angles overlaid on top of each other, one with the red coloration and one with the blue.

The 3D effect works because near objects are shifted more than distant objects between the left picture and the right picture.
That other article wrote:To get 3D photo (stereogram) it's necessary to take two pictures - one from the position of your 'left eye' and the second from the position of your 'right eye'. It's easy. Just take a snap and then shift the camera a few inches to the right (or to the left) and take second snap.

With the assumption that you're going to end up with a smaller frame, if all that is required is moving left or right i suppose it could be done by exporting a finished video, doing the color corrections on 2 versions and shifting the copies left or right...

But if you did that, then every object in the frame would have the same offset, and therefore the image would still look flat through the glasses.

Wouldn't tilting and cropping/clipping each frame work?

Ah, the article's poor writing obscured the fact that actual angles of the objects in relation to one another are the important thing here.

It could be done...I'm not really sure *why* you would really want to do it (how many people even have a pair of 3D glasses). But if you really wanted to invest the time and effort you could pull it off in any number of ways. The easiest would be to find animated footage of a camera moving around a character...that animation technique in and of itself is time consuming though so you're not going to find a lot of examples...usually only in movies or during the opening and closing sequences of a series (there's some pretty bad ass ones in Naruto). With flat video you're going to have to separate the characters from the background, the best looking way would be to redraw/trace over the character using Adobe Illustrator, export the vectors and then color them from scratch. The vector shape can be manipulated in any number of different ways to achieve different angles and to give it the 3D appearance. Then you can just put them onto a background of you're choosing. Ideally you would want to use Adobe AfterEffects and create an alpha transparent video sequence out of it, which would further your options as far as what you could do with it. The problem is though...unless you just want a single 3D picture...yeah...yer gonna have to do that at least 15 times for every second of video (or 24 if ya want it to look real smooth).

So the bottom line is, yes, it can be done, but really, who the hell would ever want to? *shrugs*
