i think probably one of the best examples of overdone effects are DecoyOps two technique beats amvs, the naruto and bleach ones. Dont get me wrong, i think they are masterfully done, the problem is that wheni showed them to some friends, i got a lot of comments like "That was pretty cool, but what was the anime about, i couldnt see too much past all the flashing lights".

Effects are nice but some of my favorite amvs have been done using windows movie maker (which has almost zero effects), such as the first version of CHANCE bleach amv. Effects can be used to enhance an amv's appeal and maybe turn a good amv into a great one but you cant build a good amv on effects alone.
