that quality was actually quite good.
from what i can see, it's all recorded from a capture card, then put on dvd.
the official dvds would just have the original video put on dvd.

so yes, theres some slight quality loss, but nowhere near noticable.

other than the horrible (and often times funny) engrish and misspelled translation, the TV tokyo logo which displays for a about 5-10 seconds each episode, and a couple of japanese emergency broadcast system tests flashing in the middle of the fucking screen that made it onto the dvd...
theres not much wrong with them

and of course the subs are all soft subbed. so once ya rip the VOBs, no subs.

Rip me some vob samples from the first few episodes.. I can then tell you for sure if there is much quality loss.. My eyes see all.. lol

You might say it's not noticeable but this is a huge misconception with a lot of people who try to compare quality between fansubs/hong kong bootlegs/official DVDs. If they pack more than 5 episodes on one DVD I'm sure they are doing something bad with the visual quality. I know I'll for sure be able to tell if there is much a difference or not. Again let me get a look at a vob sample so I can see with my own eyes.

I'd say if you could put a full 3 1/2 - hour cinematic release on a single DVD (it's being done with LotR, right?) then it's not too much of a streach to assume that 7 or 8 episodes could easily fit on a single disc now. They're not doing this because that's really not profitible in any way to the anime companies - which makes perfect sence. It's not that it can't be done.

Depends on if the dvd is single or dual layered. Big budget 3 hour films going onto dvd is going to be on a dual layer. Most bootleggers go with the cheaper single layer disks and still cram 8 episodes or so on a single disk.

Hell, even some U.S. disk released have that problem. First portion of Utena is more or less 14-16 eps or something on two disks. The compression made it look WORSE than VHS. Parts of Ruroni Kenshin TV also gets some issues with color gradients on some of the disks. Those are two of the classic examples of poor encoding/overcompressing.

I have dvds were there are like 8 episodes on one disk and every thing is fine, I'm just saying hk bootlegs have always been crap from what I've seen. I've bought 2 hong kong bootlegs before, cowboy bebop and gumdam wing from amazon sellers and these long popular series looked like crap compared to the official dvds. Thats why I don't trust hk bootlegs to long series.. Seems they always do something to the visual quality.

that sucks with Utena, and those are official releases?

Yes but I gave the reason Layers give more space for more video good companies use two layers for most 4 episode disks. Bootleggers got for producing a decent enough knockoff with the least cost and effort to them so they can make the profit margin.

And with Utena, yes that is the official CPM disk. Trust me there are tons of poorly encoded disks out there. It's not just the bootleggers sadly enough.

But seriously, if you like a show enough to make a vid, then get a decent source. Another region, spend the 20 bucks for a disk and support the people that create the show rather than using hastily encoded fansubs or chinese bootlegs.

Rozard went back and remastered Soul Cleansing with the Bleach R2s, if I remember reading that correctly:

As for FMA, the one that comes to mind immediately (mainly because I was the one responsible for its creation) is my Night Court video. Granted, it does use the R1s, but whatever. There's no spoilers to worry about, since it only uses footage from before episode 25 or 26 (can't remember which one), and none of it is integral to the storyline.
