royalty free music

Post by bum » Thu Jan 20, 2005 8:31 pm

I know that most people dont realy care about copyright laws in relation to using music in amv's. But I think it would be good to have a stickied topic list of places where you can get royalty free music. I got these from another forum.

http://www.archive.org/audio/collection ... =netlabels

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree.php

http://newgrounds.com/audio/

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.11/sample.html

http://creativecommons.org (thiers also a CC search engine in firefox. Just click the G in the google search. Found a load of sites with it)

It's not just royalty free. It's free in more than one sense, in many cases. Free as in beer AND free as in speech. Derivative works are frequently allowed (although that depends on the liscense), but sometimes there is a share-alike clause.

More links:

PDInfo.com - Public Domain Music

Ulead Pick-a-Sound royalty-free music and sound effects

Sony Sound Series

*********

Things to keep in mind:

1. "Public domain music" is not the same as "public domain sound recording." Almost all sound recordings are copyrighted, even when the music is hundreds of years old or otherwise in the public domain.

2. Royalty-free music is not cost-free music. It only means you don't pay for each "performance". There is still an up-front charge.

What are the exact licensing terms on the music? I cannot get to metalstorm.ee right now for some reason.

I'd like to re-stress that the opening post of this thread is misleading. "Royalty-free", as TaranT and Kalium pointed out, has nothing to do with what you can do with the material from the standpoint of derivative works -- which is really what we're concerned about. It is entirely possible to make content that is "royalty-free" but still antagonistic to the idea of unauthorized derivative works.

Oddly, I don't see any terms plainly posted. Strange.
