distrobution format dillema

Post by CHAMELEON_D_H » Fri Oct 01, 2004 5:41 am

hello there non hebrew speaking AMV fans of the world.... there's something i want to ask u.... if an AMV's song is in hebrew, whould u rather have the subs as part of the file (.ogm / .mkv ) or as an external file (.sub / .srt ect) zipped together w/ the avi?

i need to decide how to release this AMV so if u have time and want to see an AMV in hebrew ( BTW i prommis its a great one ) post "zipped" or "part of the file"

I'm personally for mkv with subs. Having recently released my last amv in mkv though, I can tell you that most people are too lazy or too stupid to install the matroska playback pack.

I've tried distributing a separate .sub file in the past and nobody actually bothered to use it.

Of course, if you use mkv or ogm you will get complaints from people who do not know how to use these formats.

It is possible to mux subtitle streams into avi using avimux gui but I've never really experiemented with this.

Could always make it a hard subbed song, and keep a seperate non-subbed version for Hebrew-speaking people.
Life's short.

Does it need subtitles? A lot of people edit videos to songs in japanese when they have no idea what the words mean, so you don't nessicarily need the lyrics. That being said, if they are essential to understanding the video I think you should go with Matroska. I'd get it, to see a AMV in hebrew.

Good luck.

I did! :)
Didn't acutally matter much, the video was more like moodsynch to me ;)

But yeah, what penpen said. I did 2 videos to japanese music as well and even synched the lyrics, but as they are both flashy dance and action I didn't want subs to bother the viewer.
However I'm considering to make subs if I make a video with german music which focuses on lyricsynch, I would make a .sub or .srt file seperated.
If you want to ensure that the viewer reads the subs hardsubbing is the best way ;)

As for .ogm and .mkv, I wouldn't use them since a) they haven't much advantages for AMVs compared to an avi with .srt-file and b) they are much more complicant to set up for the viewer.
