I'd be careful of what your basing as your standards. Technically superior does NOT equal a superior AMV. Some of my long time favorites are really technically simple, Info High by Maboroshi for example.

While I do like the works of creators like VicBond007 who use some truely incredable effects, the videos I seem to keep coming back to are the ones that focused on storyline and meaningful scene selection, they just have a higher replay value for me.

Do what works for you, not what you think everyone else is looking for.

It took me two videos (Tetsuo crumbles, Living Dead Alita) to learn that lesson.

The point of small goals is so you can actually reach them. Big goals are fine but if they're not achievable, then what's the point? I'm not saying shadow flare isn't capable of doing that, I really don't know, I just said to be realistic. If it's a long term goal, as opposed to one for your next video, then it's not a bad idea. Good luck.
Shadow Flare wrote:What I find strange is the way people refer to mirrors or white flashes as 'advanced'. When I start seeing home-made, moving sepia tones and 40 boxes moving across the screen, I'll say 'advanced'.

As for right now, my standards retain advanced as something like VirtuaAnime and Euphoria.
A lot of people here care a lot more about other aspects of AMV's. They are impressed by the way effects are used, not effects for effects sake. For example Virtua Anime is probably my least favorite of AD's videos (including his less well known ones like AccellaNation) because it's incredibly spiffy but other than that I don't care for it. I know you didn't mean to sound this way, but remember that just because someone has different standards than you does not make you better than them.

Onyyx put it well. I have a lot of favorites that are just cuts and fades.

BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS THAT MOVING BOXES AROUND THE SCREEN WITH WAVFORMS AND HEXAGONS IS ADVANCED.

AS ADVANCED AS AMVS WILL EVER GET. UNTIL WE GOT A NEW TAINTED DONUTS.

LOL HE CUT THE CHARACTERS OUT.

HILARIOUS.

That is a really really good video! Best FLCL video (SRV included :) ). Although I didn't like repetition with the screen motions I still really enjoyed it. Great job! :big up:

:) There's nothing wrong with raising standards so high. I say go for it  . Haven't seen nothing that'll shock me for a very long time (even above mentioned videos).

Mistery Conundrum & Olin are so far the most advanced in effects department. Videos like Playground Love & Virtua Anime following closely, while Euphoria and Die Another Day represent effective ways of manipulating with simple techniques in a very clever and ingenious manner.

Aim for the stars and you'll make it to the moon. Aim for the moon and you'll never make it through the atmosphere.

Well, yeah, in hindsight, I suppose I came off as saying "I must be good with effects to have a good video," which really wasn't what I meant. I'm just looking for videos that really are eye catching, compare them, then see if I can come up with any effect ideas that could be percieved as "pretty damned cool," provided I can pull it off.

Also - whether I should or not - I consider the actual flow of the video to be part of its techincal merit. Even if it's just cuts'n'fades, does it really match the feel of the song? Does it come off actually looking like serious planning went into it?

I mean, I can pick out at least two or three things that I don't like about every video I see, including my favorites and my own (they are my first ones, after all), but now I just want to challenge myself a bit more.
