Dont forget, Quu, if someone wants help in building one of these beasts, and even putting the videos on it for them, we're happy to discuss that, too.

Considering the amount of computer Quu is getting for this measly, truly paltry sum of dollars, I'm still impressed. Try finding any prefab that offers anything close for that price. you wont.

um. . . .could you sell blank cds and dvds at a markup, obviously stating why its been marked up and where the $$ goes when buying some? Giving someone something tangible for their donation is the best way i know to encourage the behavior. like the KOR pin in your LDS. :)

your icon... so CUTE!!!!

the problem is that people don't pay for blank media... they pay for having amvs put on it... there in lies the problem...

a freind suggested having a charity auction like thing... where some peopel could donate items to be sold... which is a good diea

the problem i have is other than pure donation... which is very hard to make happen... i can't think of any other idea... the charity auction sounds like a good idea... but i have no idea how to organize it outside of AWA... and by that time its to late

We're (Quu and I) going to be putting up a donation page hopefully sometime soon. The problem is we don't know exactly what all to put up there. We've already got a paypal logo up on the contest site, and we'll probably set up something like an email so if people want to make arrangements someother way they can.

Another thing that's been discussed is another auction. (Remember the one with EK's drawings and Joe's Computer at AWA? though that was for the VAT and not The Archive) The only con we could do it at before AWA is Otakon. We'd have to discuss it with the con and then get people to donate stuff for auction. The cool thing is that if someone can donate even small stuff that can go for cheap, then we can get those who can't afford the big stuff to help out too. You know everyone likes Pocky! Mmmm... Pocky.... 8)

No no! I meant. . .REALLY SELLING STUFF. . . :D like a vendor. not selling amvs.

And it could be anything. I just figured it should be something relevant, like blank optical media.

the only problem is this would require small capital, or people to donate blank cd's/dvds to us.

So you get a case of blank discs, and you charge. . .say, 10~20% more than it cost us. We don't have to make any secrets why we marked it up, we're trying to pay for the computer stuff. and the people buying it would know that. Everybody always needs blank discs.

But again, we could think of anything we could vend, mark it up, let people KNOW what the money is paying for.

again. . .just a suggestion. And i'm glad you like my icon.

During some technical discussion someone said it was hard to take ZARAX's posts seriously with their icon beside the text. I liked that, so i figured i'd try the same thing with something i liked. ;p

I thought I'd just ask a question...
Why is it necessary for the master archive to be a hard drive/actual computer? If all you are after is a record of nearly every amv wouldn't it be easier to burn them to CD?

Do you knwo how many CDs that woudl be? 600 gig is over 1000 cds... since you can't fit exactly 650 meg on the cd... the amvs are not perfectly sized file wize to span discs

Quu,

Have you considered backing up files en masse to a collection of DVDs ? Seems like the cheapest, most direct solution unless something about the current machine need fixing.

Or, what about external Firewire hard drives ?

Given the legal gray-area we operate in, I'm always wary of donating significant amounts of money. But I don't mind donating hardware, either new or used. If this gets going, count me in for a stick of RAM, or a NIC, or a video card...something that's generic and that I can ship without spending too much on postage.

Off-topic: I think you were looking for After Effects tutorials at the Creative Cow.

My friend has two bookcases full of CD's (that would be over 1000 right?) and some commerical databases/libaries have all their info burnt to disk and have row upon row of CD's. I just thought it would be a cheaper option in the long run... *shrugs* whatever
