question
ok... i recently signed up (yes i am a frickin newbeee XP) and i read over the rules... and i have a question... they say no downloaded movie clips... and i dont put any in any music vids... but i do buy dvds from those cheap places that know how to burn em and sell 'em for cheap... so basicly their like buying fan subs... could those be considered among the "downloaded" clips since they are subbed by fans? or would it be alright to use in a music vid?

Unless they have permission to distribute from the owner of the copyright technically, it's illegal...
That's just the law, but maybe the other members well be nicer to you and say it's ok...

It's all about how you morally feel. In your heart you will know that purchasing an import DVD to use to make AMVs is most likely making the original Anime company a little bit poorer. But as long as you don't announce it to other people, and compress it very badly, it's not like other people will really be able to tell. So the question is how much guilt would you feel by doing that, and whether or not you could live with it. And then there are certain titles you just can't get good quality for without importing it, or taking footage from fansubs. (Violinist of Hameln for example)

Then again, any transmission of copyrighted video is considered illegal (i.e. AMV's)
There are really two issues behind the downloading is a no-no rule.
1. The quallity is reduced, it has been encoded and for you to edit it and re-encode means losing even more data and quallity.
2. Since distributing AMV's is already on the fringe of legality (technicaly over it [wow, I'm really tired if I can't even spell technically correctly]) sticking to legally purchased video is the best idea.

Sounds like Hong Kong bootlegs to me.kioshi wrote:but i do buy dvds from those cheap places that know how to burn em and sell 'em for cheap... so basicly their like buying fan subs... could those be considered among the "downloaded" clips since they are subbed by fans?
I'd avoid those, since the video quality isn't up to par with a legit DVD. Plus if you've got "hard" subtitles (meaning you can't turn them off) that limits your ability to edit with that footage.
Stick with legit DVDs. It'll be better in the long run.
