I personally think Higurashi no naku koroni is way too bright, in general (at least to me) it doesn't have a dark atmosphere. besides, I'd rather have real characters and not the usual lolis.

Elfen Lied doesn't seem dark enough to me (Besides, I know the anime better than any other and I'd like to do something 'new').

And I simply hate the looks of Gantz :/

Umm... Claymore? It's got evil, it's got dark, it's got depression, twisted psycho characters, lots of blood and violence and most of it is with female characters.

the second one mainly would cover lots of blood (lots of people exploding and stuff) and violence.
The first one would cover just about everything you are looking for.

John Oppliger called the Apocalypse Zero OVA "the most viscerally violent and gruesome anime" he has seen and "arguably the most grotesque anime ever made"

I actually came across Apocalypse Zero by accident when i was downloading some random things a while back and they aren't kidding about it being very gruesome and grotesque.
From what i seen of it, there is a female character in it for a short while
until she gets 'juiced'
Be sure that you aren't eating anything when it gets to that scene^^;;;;

That made me think of another good one - Mnemosyne no Musumetachi, Though Claymore has more action oriented scenes, but Mnemosyne is sick and twisted...

In the end it's dependant on the style you're looking for.

If you want utter senseless and discusting mindwarping sensless violence and murder you could do a Phantasmagoria Video Game AMV... That game is seriously the most disturbing thing I have ever seen... Moreso than Wishmaster.

The Escaflowne movie is pretty dark. Witch Hunter Robin as well. And as far as twisted goes, I haven't found anything that tops the last two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
