And HDTVs do have built in upscaling hardware, that do all kinds of image processing. My mom bought a 52" Samsung HDTV, and we watched an SD DVD on it. She was complaining about the quality being crappy, thinking that it would look as good as HD (thinking that just because it was an HD TV, everything would look amazing on it). I was trying to tell her the limitations of the hardware when using old SD video, and how SD gets uprezzed to HD. I thought the image looked pretty damn good to be an SD DVD.
Most built in up-converters in HDTVs arn't that great. She really needs a DVD player built for up-converting or a Blue-ray player (All of which up-convert for SD DVDs). In addition, the player needs to be connecting using a Component connection or a HMDI. The only issue I have is the blacks looking took black at times (if that makes sense).
Hmm nyes indeed. The DVD player we were using is an old SD model. I think she said something to the effect of biting the bullet and getting a bluray player sometime, so we'll see how that works.
