Yes. In fact there are a ton more AMVs without masking than WITH, so obviously masking is not essential to making AMVs.

How can one possibly even theorize that an AMV without masking is...somehow...not an AMV?

I just use whatever special effects I have at hand - which isn't much considering I'm limited to what I can do with Win Movie Maker, Nerovision, Paint Shop Pro, and Animation Shop - if I feel there's a need for them. So, yeah, I typically spend many many weeks working on AMVs with few if any bells and whistles. I'm wondering if I'm just wasting my time on boring crap. Nah. I often like the results I get and I've had enough compliments to think maybe someone else does too. *shrug*

So, no. special effects of any kind aren't absolutely necessary. Useful? Yup. Nifty? You bet. Required? Only by snobs.
