Great points indeed.

I've hung around here for 5 years, rarely posting, but always reading. Two things come to mind that I've learned in my editing journey.

a) A wise editor once said "if a picture is worth a thousand words, I have a lot to say in 5000 frames."
So when I watch a video, I remember that chances are, the editor has poured their heart and soul into this piece. So whether it's a new editor, or someone who's been around for a while, I want to see what they are trying to convey to me (the audience). It's a glimpse into their way of thinking.

b) A long time ago, I read a thread that discussed the loss of innocence that a new editor has. You know, when we are excited about what we've created rather then jaded. Well like you CorpseGoddess, I went through the "five stages of grief" in terms of editing. I call it the "were do I fit in in this big wide world of editing:"....however, that old thread came to mind, and so I decided what I needed to do was find that innocence again. You know, all it comes down to is, thinking outside of the box (the set of rules we editors seem to set for ourselves) They can be anything from how long or short a clip needs to be, what effects/lack of effect we should use, how many competitions we need to win, how many downloads/responses,opinions/comments we should have ect, ect and the list goes on. That my friends is the slump....not the new videos coming out.
On a side note, the only three videos of mine that have ever won anything, have been the three that went against my set of rules.

as for the same ole same ole:
I mean sure, the more you watch the more you see the same effects, but come on. That's like going into an art gallery and saying I don't like painting (A) because it used the same brush stroke as painting (B). As Emong so wisely said
Originality - it's also a subjective feeling and will never disappear as that :D

Amen.

now what's a slump ?

There are good Vids I don't like but I appreciate them because the editor put a lot of work in it or simply had a good Idea/editing style. I wouldn't say we lack of good amvs, there is a lot that can be done. However, I see that this community is quite a hard working one. You can't create something good and original within 6 hours... with a few exclusions of course.
Just edit what you like and share it with others.. that's the point.

AMVs started out as a hobby. Its not a hobby anymore. Its a competition where everyone is striving for perfection. Because of certain 'epic' amvs, most people here have set there standards so high, that anything below it isnt acceptable. It doesnt matter how good an amv is, theres always someone out there who will literally rip it to shreds because it gives them some kind of ego boost.

No one appreciates the effort put into anything anymore. I've never said that an amv sucks, unless the video deliberately intended to suck. There are many ways to say you dont like an amv, like "its not my cup of tea", "sorry i couldn't really get into it", etc, following the comment with constructive criticism. All i see here is "this amv sucks", "wow that was disappointing", with the person going through and describing each and every second of the amv and tearing it apart. It is NOT helping the editor get better and it sure as feck isnt going to do much for their self esteem.

And I also get horribly irritated with how noobs are treated here, such as posting a youtube link on the announcements thread. Just tell them that its against the rules and ask them to catalog it, then lock the thread. Of course all i ever see is comments about how much of a noob the person is, and the famous "inbeforewtfisboochsack", which, really, if you're trying to be funny, its been done so much that it isnt funny anymore. Seriously, we're all noobs once, but for the ones who make typical noob mistakes here, they never get a second chance.

To conclude, you all sicken me. I hate you all.

I'm going to disagree with you on all three points.

1. I don't know where this notion of "competitive about AMVs" comes from. I've seen a few people piss and cry like toddlers when they don't win a contest, but that's awfully rare. Does anyone even have a notion of standards on an AMV? I figure the bar's as low as not having subtitles, interlacing, or a DivX logo, and then the judging proceeds from there.

2. There are videos that suck, end of story. There shouldn't be anything wrong with saying so, either. Saying "not my cup of tea" implies that it's an okay video otherwise, but it just didn't cater to my tastes. A video with interlacing, ugly-ass effects, and a concept that was poorly executed doesn't simply fail to cater to my tastes, it's just straight-up bad - and god dammit, I'm going to say so if I think the editor cares enough about my input. As for seeing nothing but unwarranted criticism, I honestly see unwarranted praise much more often.

3. If a new member doesn't take the time to understand how a community works, why should the community bend over backwards to accommodate for their ignorance? Yes, I'll concede that there are plenty of howling retards on the forums who think it's still hilarious to copy age-old jokes, but the reality is that if a new person can't take the five minutes to recognize that this place is not YouTube, then they probably don't care enough about the hobby for us to care about them anyway.

That sums up my feelings as well.

As for my thoughts about being in a slump, I can't really judge since I haven't watched alot of videos this year. I decided to post this thread after seeing the initial reaction to the AWA Pro discs and hearing about some "meh" contests this year.

i do believe that the crappy videos are slowly migrating to the tube... i know lots of editors that will release random crap there, but will hold out their "good stuff" for here O.o

I'd say that it's pretty much never the case. Usually there's always been the mediocre videos stanking up the market, but then we get a shiny new release that makes us all happy. To be honest, seeing Baka and the Beast yesterday pretty much was one of maybe five good videos released during this summer break. :O

How to repair?

Uh... Be more creative?
