.. some of the best AMV's actually used to be made from one-hit-wonders that were on TV but never released on DVD. Magical Chocolate was only one episode. The Cat was later updated to De Capo the series. Something un-heard-of can sometimes be quite enjoyable 8-)

In a competition that really depends.

If it is judge voted odds are it won't make a difference since Judges know what to look for and how to judge videos across each other.

Audinces however are different because they are highly responsive to titles they like or characters etc etc. So they more readily anticipate the video artificially heightening their response to it; this also runs the risk of the audience is more likely to understand what you are going for in your video because they know the title. This is a general rule of AMVs that if the audience knows the work you are using they're more likely to get what you were going for however if they don't know it then it's a crapshoot.

As for music; except for using wierd internet songs that are suddenly popular generally this doens't affect your video in a contest as far as the audience goes. Sometimes people will be excited about a video because of how random a song you found taht they alleady know (i.e. Tunak Tunak, Numa Numa, Heut is Mein Taug(sp?).
