Doom9 forum

Post by Ashton » Sun Dec 22, 2002 11:28 am

Ive just spent the last 2 hours of my night weading through the Doom9.net forum for no real particular reason other than that Ive been meaning to do it for a while. Anyway, I just have to ask, this forum seems so onGodly difficult, so unearthly advanced, how many of you really understand what these people are talking about? Are any of you members there? Have any of you ever written a module/script for on one of these forums? This seems rediculous, and I just want to know if our comunity can keep up with their rediculousness.

Me :) I'm a Semi-regular on the XviD and AVISynth forums. And I wrote a script for Zarxrax once which I posted at doom9 which implements a Range() function in AVIsynth which is very handy for selective filtering of a range of frames.

I know Zarxrax posts there, AD posts there once in a blue moon, RadicalEd mindlessly plugs RealVideo9 there just as much as he does here

Those are the only people I can think of off the top of my head.

:P

I check the forums every day after I'm done here. 99% of the time its the Audio Encoding forum, the XviD forum, the New A/V Formats forum, the Avisynth forum, and the (S)VCD Encoding/Authoring forum. Sometimes I surf around the general discussion or hacking/development forums.

The reason its so advanced is the superstrict moderation. If you don't know what you're talking about or you're asking stupid questions you'll hear about it. Not to be discouraging, you just have to do enough reading and testing on your own before going around like you have something to say.

Yeah Ed, but do you know the XviD code inside and out? I know just about as much theory as I learned from ErMaC and Absolute destiny along with my own meager personal expirience which accounts for just about enough to make a music video without TOTALLY screwing the puch on the video and audio... exceept for recently where my experience has somehow turned back on itself and I have become horribly inept for some reason. Anyway, do you program new plugins for realvideo 9 Ed?

no, considering this year was the first chance I've had at a programming class and its crappy visual basic, and theyre ditching C++ in favor of Java next year. But as soon as I can figure out a way to teach myself C++ you can bet I'll be programming yer damn plugins :p
Anyway you dont have to be a programmer to be on those boards, all thats required is an interest in encoding and some smarts.
But, since all I've got under my belt are a few months of vb I do have about 4 gui efforts going on which is about all one can do with that language :\
I wrote a guide on converting menus from dvd to svcd also, but thats the extent of my community output for now :\

Even I know a bit of C/C++
No, honestly, Ive read three and half books about C++ but never really had any interest or need to use it. Even now, even assuming I WANTED to make something like that I would have to first learn about what is already there (the codecs and the like) Oh well... its something interesting to think about and read anyway.

I'm not really a programmer either, but being good when thinking about video theory and knowing your s--- when it comes to encoding helps.

Heck, the latest version of Dup by Donald Graft includes a new behavioral change suggested by me. I found a bug in his Show drawing code that would cause a crash and also suggested a better way to deal with runs of duplicates.

And this kinda stuff happens all the time. I had an idea for a motion-masked temporal filter, although turns out the idea was crap when Donald tried to implement it (and it wasn't entirely my idea either). :D

It's just nice being there in order to keep up with the latest in technology because the newest AVISynth and XviD stuff all goes on there.

Not to necropost, but if you wanna see how technical these kinds of discussions can get, check out this thread:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s ... genumber=1

At about page 3 it starts getting REALLY technical and even I'm somewhat lost. ^_^
