would you expect this in hawaii? i would.
Right now, it is 10:40 pm, December 13, 2002. Earlier at around 4 pm, 3 of my friends and I went riding BMX a few miles away exploring schools or any places that would be fun to ride at. We did not use the bus at all that day so we were riding around everywhere, up and down hills, through and back miles of bike paths. At around 9 pm one of my friends had to leave because he had to go home so there was only 3 of us left. We rode around for a little more then decided to head back. We rode back through the bike path from which we came with only the moon as our light.
When we reached the town about a mile down from where we lived (the towns are separated by a freeway), we decided to wait for a bus that would take us to the end of the towns road so we could head up home. As we waited one of my friends decided to grind a plastic bench that was near by. People across the street didn’t have as much enthusiasm as we did on the sport. Most of them looked like older men and the one looked like someone in their 20’s. Right after my friend got out of the grind we heard someone make the sound with their lips like ‘psssssssss’ followed by a “hey!” Thinking it was no big deal, my friend did another grind, and once again we heard another ‘psssss’ followed by a “hey!” After my friend heard it a second time he ‘psssssss’d’ back. Next thing we heard was another ‘psssss’ this time followed by a “fuck you!” My friend sat down wondering what the people across the street were thinking.
As we sat there, my friend noticed one of the guys leave and then we all saw him come back with a 2x4 piece of wood about 4 feet long. He started to swear at us and threaten us by saying he could take us all on without anyone else jumping in. We thought he was on drugs or something because we have never really had this kind of thing happen to us. He taunted more and my friend said “fuck that” while my other friend mumbled “stupid…” We decided to leave and my friends pedaled away fast while I sat down and casually rode away. My friends yelled back at them as they rode away, all I could think was how stupid this all was. Then I heard footsteps thudding, someone was chasing so I started to pedal a little faster but I was still sitting down. Then I heard him throw the 2x4 and it hit the ground, not once did I look back, I couldn’t believe people like that actually existed. I am not even sure if the people by him were on his side, but one did stand from his seat. Funny thing is things like this happen all around the place and not only at night. Hawaii is such a great place isn’t it?

heh, maybe he likes the bench and didn't like you guys tearing the shit out of by grinding metal parts acrossed it. I think his reaction was a bit extreme though....
In my area we have neightborhood improvement fund and the neighborhood as a whole chips in to buy things like benches, repair sidewalks, etc. It might be like that there. I'd be pissed too if I footed money to put in a bench and some guys came along and decided to practice their "sport" on it. I have nothing against BMX, but rather the attitude that some riders have: that they can do what ever they want whereever they want. That's just being ignorant.

i'm with earth on this one; you should've told your friend to shut up and sit down after the first 'psssss', whatever the hell that sounds like. it's not like you didn't get warned.. what, three times? i highly doubt you're telling the entire story as well. it sounds like you guys were doing a little more taunting at the other people than they were at you. no one would just get a big wood board for some beatin' if the other guys were simply grinding rails/benches/trees/nails/cats.
and besides, you guys were on bikes. bmxers usually take that to heart and decide that, as earthcurrent put it, they can do whatever they want to simply because they can ride away. really fast, i might add.

yea i admit my friend should have just shut up, he tends to do stupid things. He even yelled "bite me!" to some dude in a big wheel truck and the guy started chasing us and yelling. Sometimes he just wants to act tough just like people all around my area. Its quite stupid. My frineds also tend to say things like "we're bikers, we can do whatever the hell we want" and i love to ride BMX, but i hate getting trouble from people or police. It would make mroe sense to me just to stop and go somewhere else, but my frineds only see my ass paranoid. :/

sounds like you actually think of bmxing as a sport, not a stereotypical blindfold for people to staple you with. my advise would be to get out of that crowd, and if they're the only bmxers you know, just create a new crowd of true bmxers who ride cause they like to, not cause they want to piss people off and make you 'ass paranoid'.

I don't know about what Earth Current said because nothing around where i live comes from neighborhoods or nothing. Everything is bought and paid for by the city. So unless its going to hurt me i don't think theres any reason to say anything to somebody grinding on stuff. I think its funny when they fall actually.
Madness and genius are seperated only by degrees of success.
I don't think necessity is the mother of invention - invention, in my opinion, arises directly from idleness, possibly from laziness. To save oneself trouble.
