Anime Rental Store?

Post by y2kwizard » Mon Dec 02, 2002 8:42 pm

What would be the feasability (spelling??) of opening a rental store in which the main attraction would be anime? Is this even financially possible? Are there enough anime movies/OVA's/series to fill an entire Blockbuster-size store?

Just wondering what the thoughts are. The reason I bring this up is that my Blockbuster has an "Animation" section that's extremely small, and literally 90% of the section is taken over by --yep, you guessed it-- DBZ. I'm not saying DBZ's bad, I'm just not interested in seeing it right now. Blockbuster only had the Eva tape 0:2 or whatever it's called. And I don't really want to pay hundreds of dollars to buy a series that I'll watch all the way through only once or twice and then possibly use 3 minutes of footage for an AMV.

What are your thoughts?

good idea, though I don't know if you'll gain alot of profit from it. If you find a spot that you know there's alot of anime lovers then ....yeah, it could work.
and yes, you can have anime that fills up blockbuster. alot of anime have OVA series and TV series and another TV series and on and on and on, don't forget them movies

The most obvious problem with the whole idea is this: what do you do about all those rippers out there? I KNOW that I personally would at least be tempted to rip footage for an AMV from rented material, and I'm sure there are many that would give into the temptation.....how would we counter this?

I'd actually LOVE it if there were some contract in which we would allow the AMV makers to rip DVD's...as a store, I don't really care. But legally, it creates problems.

Any ideas?

I would say that you probably couldn't make a profit, much less a living, from just rentals (and sales) of one video genre. Even full fledged video stores go under pretty often, especially under the onslaught of Blockbuster and its clones.

You'd need an edge, and it'd have to appeal to a large enough interest base, which I don't think the assuredly otherwise fine city of Memphis, Tennessee, can provide :D . If you maybe got a projector, DVD player, and a large (not movie theater sized, but large) screen or projection TV, and charged or offered showings (along with selling snack goods for extra moolah), sold manga, video games, and other otaku appealing merchandise, and also tried to tap into some of the other interests many anime fans have, then you might have a shot.

Just my $0.02 ($55.60 Canadian).
I'm out...

lol. OK, well, I guess it woudn't work too well in Memphis. But remember,I can always move when I get out of college...would New York City provide a wide enough base? Hmm...

And besides, once I make my 23 billion in whatever I do, money will be of no object, and I can make a large chain of stores without worrying about making a profit. :D

And yes, Memphis does rock all other cities' worlds because there's so much to do he--wait...uhmm...hmm...never mind.

*does a victory dance*

There's one two blocks away from my work that is best KNOWN for it; I think they stay alive by a) being within 4 blocks of two enormous college campuses (U. of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon Univ.), one with a major anime club (as I understand) and b) having other kinds of videos as well.

They only deal with VHS tapes, no DVDs last I was there (re: ripping).

Oh criminy, I have to go back now. :P

Anyway, my point was, placement is very important.

I put together a business plan a few years ago about opening a Video Rental store in Harvard Sq. It wasn't a speciality store and would have relyed on new popular releases, but i was planning on spending a good portion of the start-up funds on carrying cult, anime and classic films. According to the plan, I would have had to lose money for 3 years before I started seeing black using sales charts for other retail stores in the area. I scrapped that idea and put together the design company my wife and I now run instead...

I can't imagine a speciality rental store doing much better, but if you're serious about this, I suggest you buy this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... e&n=507846

This book was invaluable: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... ce&s=books

and visit these websites:

www.sba.gov
www.business.gov
www.nolo.com

Most importantly, talk to retail owners in the area you are planning to place your shop! Take them out to lunch and ask 100 questions. I learned more that way than any book, website or software could teach me.

Good luck and keep us updated on your progress!
Tom
