Edits in Video Games

Post by DTJB » Thu Nov 20, 2003 5:42 pm

Has this ever happened to you, you play a video game and decide it's one of the best ever, but you later find out that you didn't get the full version, just because it's an American version? A lot of people should know that some video games (older ones mostly) that have been ported from Japan have been edited so they won't seem as offensive. Apparently, this is still happening in some cases, Bloody Roar 3 had some of it's more explicit images and scenes removed before being translated in English (character gives the finger, bare breast shot). Here are some more examples I can think of.

SNK games: In a lot of the SNK fighting games, blood shed has been removed and some of the more violent moves are removed.

Bionic Commando (NES): In the Japanese version, you're fighting a group of Neo-Nazis. Naturally, there are swastikas everywhere. In the U.S. version, it's just "some terrorist group" with an eagle as their emblem. Funny, they took the "offensive" swastikas out, but they left the images of Hitler getting his face shot off in.

Just a few more edits in that game.

Puyo Puyo: More of an alteration. When two versions of this puzzle game where ported to the states, game developers figured that consumers would be turned off by the anime looking characters. So, more recognizable characters replaced the obscure ones and those games became Kirby's Avalanche and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

If anyone else can think of anymore edits (name changes don't really count in my book), please contribute. Additions to U.S. versions (extra FMV in Final Fantasy VII) are also accepted.
Probably too busy to be here right now.

Well, when Working Designs worked on Lunar for PS they pretty much changed all the dialouge. So that it would fit better for Americans and all.

On another game they worked on (I forget the name) they changed a scene where a girl flipped someone off, to where she was just shaking her fist.

Damn, I used to play DRMBM all the time (and a friend of mine played KA a lot) and I never knew that =/

All I have to say, Final Fantasy IV (U.S. II) is unbeliveably edited. Heck, when I got the ROMs of these two games, I was suprised at the amount of swearing, cussing, and sexual inuendos (mostly w/ Cecil and Rosa) Final Fantasy IV had. Heck, it's A LOT harder to build up levels since the tough enemies don't give you as much experience points unlike U.S. Final Fantasy II.

Also in IV they left a few items like the item titled "Alert" it was left out in the american version why?Who knows! It helps in getting the pink tail i know that why they left it out i don't know though. Also They changed the "Bomb Ring"into just "Package" in the begging part of the game.also no apparent reason. They took out my favorite attack too,The Dark Wave. Now why on Gods green Earth would they take out that attack. It fricking rocked.(stupid square and there downcast opionins about the americans)

keep in mind alot of the edits really don't matter whether you like the game or not. but yeah I prefer the unedited version o.0 of anything (got Twin Towers Extended Version -_- much more 'unedited' than Fellowship, Fellowship Ex Ver was just extras galore, cept Mr. Bilbo's trolls ;-p).
