Uh oh! Now, I'm REALLY an OTAKU!

Post by danielwang » Mon Nov 17, 2003 12:53 am

Areyo (Wang Daniel) is an anime otaku, in all of the extreme (and extremely derogative) senses of the word.

I just realized some things:

1. I have more Jpop songs than I have English

2. I can sing them, backwards, with a Japanese accents

3. ... although I don't know the language

4. Playback counter for "HAL - the starry sky" is 56

5. Anime Music Videos... I know what those are, I make them

6. FANFICS! I've made, well, one. And it was crap. But I made one.

7. Cosplay. Need I say more?

7a (not anime)
If my parents find out what "LARP" is and my connections to the local LARP scene I'm going to be in the state mental institution...

8. The first Japanese I tried to read was "SKY! PerfecTV" satellite service guide

9. Second was "Newtype"

10. I watch subs, too.

11. I have a TM Revolution import disc

12. That I got at the local con (third year in a row)

13. Even WORSE, I've absorbed the culture, politics, even the groupthink and logistic reasoning!

14. I know what "NTT DoCoMo" is and I want one of their phones
14a. I have stock in DCM

15. I can name major companies such as Mitsui Sumitomo, Toei (the rail line) and Hitachi.

I AM AN OTAKU!

On that note, the REAL Japanese national pastime, of course, is SMS (texting), and I even know how to txtmsg like one of Them... *turns on predictive input* tick tick click tick tick tick click click tick click tick tick tick tick click tick tick tick click tick tick tick click tick tick tick tick click tick tick click BEEEEP!
Texting in traffic, texting at lunch, texting at 4.7 clicks per second
I'll fit in just perfectly!

I can write those in Japanese so I beat you, not that that's something to be proud of.

I just found that out today because I have a paper to do on Japan.

I can recall the Hiragana and Katakana tables, but it takes a long to link them to sounds because I can only access them in a-i-u-e-o order, and then they're still just facts, not concepts and relationships in my brain.

The Prime Minister is Ichijo, not Blair. Wait, both are correct.

Payphones with a gold band mean international calls

Notches in door handles, milk cartons and cards are for the visually impaired.

The yellow band on a Toei turnstile means your ticket gets returned

Convenience stores are located in industrial buildings and have bill-pay, photo printing and internet kiosks.

The entire nation is a gradient between tightly packed cities and centuries old traditional architecture, depending on which city.

Anything East of Osaka is NTT EAST, other than that, NTT WEST and KDDI.

The C-zone DoCoMo service works on legacy phones not via infrared or radio link, but used to work with an encrypted barcode on the LCD display.

The local cuisine has developed as a product of several factors, namely, the coastal economy and the long transport times inland. Oh, and the long, cold windters.

Don't push the buttons on the toilet! I regularly visit China, so I know what the "other" ones are like... you know...

Stand on the right or left side of the esalator, depending on the city.

K-cars have yellow plates and get cheaper toll, cheaper inspections and easier parking

The National Police Agency, npa.go.jp has mini police stations every few kilometers in some areas

Don't stick the chopsticks up in the bowl of rice (applies in China, too)

Same rules for wrapping presents, business etiquette, as China. Such as, presenting the business cards with two hands.

"Reading" a person's bow is actually a bit complex, like reading a handshake. It's also a negotiation (in TCP/IP terms) header. So it's important to bow to a certain angle and pause the correct amount of time, etc. Just like SYN/ACK/RST.

Each member of the family puts their futon away in the morning

Schoolchildren clean the classroom before leaving. If you left the trash there, you pick it up.

The first and last cars are free seating (refers to other rail line)

---------------------
Although not really one of "them", I do have a similar logistic reasoning process (objective over subjective, quantitative over qualitative)... I'd probably be good at Go because I reason by averaging the weight of decisions instead of tree branching.
Groupthink? No, but I do (a) work well in small groups and committees and (b) as a matter or personal philosophy and principle, place the interest of the group and society before my own.

----------------------

And, the mark of a real Japanese person:

Open up the handy and go to txtmsg. Then open up "TM Revolution - Hear of Sword". Both hands are allowed... now text the lyrics, including spaces (txtspeak ok) into the phone keeping pace with the music.

I, personally, practice the art of left-handed texting twice a week while I'm bored... in English, though. Hopefully by the end of the year I;ll be able to press "642496477028513" in 3 seconds, or 5 buttons a second.

"PREDICTIVE INPUT IS FOR SISSIES"

Forgot to mention:

I know 1.2 folk sayings:
"The nail that sticks up is hammered down"
The other one involved animals of some kind and it's message was that similar kinds, well, I forgot.

Along with a complete chart of Japanese Linguistics and how it NEVER conforms to X-Bar Theory (which is in my portfolio), I know some deprecated words (see: How to talk like a samurai). Most Japanese speakers still understand the -dono suffix for backwards-compatibility, but refer to yourself in third person with "sessha" and they'll never figure it out.
