ghost stories

Post by Kamoc » Fri Oct 24, 2003 8:54 pm

the goal of this is to get someone to have a nightmare before or on the night of halloween, so you can do it by any means necessary*. just remember: true scary stories are much more frightening than fake ones (or atleast fake ones that seem real).

anyway, this has only happened to me a few times and it's not really that scary, but it's one of the only stories i know that involves some sort of a ghost.

back when i was in middle school, my brother and i would have to spend some time over at my grandma and grandpa's farm. there was really no point to it other than to get us out of my parent's hair, but we knew our grandparents loved the company. they always had stuff planned, and whether it was fun (they had billions of board games and old movies) or just tasking (they loved making us clean up after the goats) there was always something to do. eventually my parents decided to give us the oppurtunity to sleep over at their house, and we gladly accepted (all-night monopoly games fucking rule).

before i go on, there's something about my grandparant's house i should probably tell you. the stairs leading up to the second floor are incredibly short and extremely high; meaning if you're not holding onto the railing, you're going to fall straight down them. even if you were an adult you'd have a hard time walking (let alone running) up the stairs without losing your balance.

after my grandma had won the fifteenth game in a row for the night we had planned on sleeping over (cheater), i had decided to call it a night. i walked upstairs to the room they had assigned us (which is straight ahead of the stairs) and fell asleep in one of the two sleeping bags that were laying on the ground. there was no clock to tell me what time it was when i went to bed, but it couldn'tve been more than a couple hours before i woke up to the sound of someone coming up the stairs.

as i struggled to grab my glasses and yell at whoever was taking their sweet damn time coming up the staircase, i noticed brian (my brother) in the sleeping bag across from me. as the footsteps came slowly up the stairs, i woke him up to see if there was any dinner left (i'm a sucker for midnight snacks). while he was explaining how you put things into the refridgerator, the footsteps stopped.

a second later, someone slammed on the door. and not just slapped it with their hand or kicked it, the entire door shook as though they had thrown their entire body onto it. needless to say we were both scared out of our minds, but the shaking stopped after a while and i eventually asked brian if grandpa and grandma were awake. turns out they weren't, and had gone to bed right when he did.

as soon as i was gonna go out the door and into the master bedroom to ditch my brother and sleep with them, the footsteps started again. except this time, they weren't so slow.

someone came running up the stairs and slammed on the door. i belted back and flew into the sleeping bag, only to realize that the door wasn't locked when i had gone over there to open it. if someone wanted in, they could do it. and right when i poked my head out from the sheet to look, i could see the knob twisting slowly around.

it was to the point where whoever was on the other side could've just pushed the door open, but it swung back and forth many times before it finally stopped. me and brian were too scared to move, but that happened every time one of us got up to test the door. there were three types of footsteps: the slow kind, the running kind and the stomping kind; where the footsteps were slow, yet each time they'd slam the steps as hard as they could. and each time those feet got to the top of the stairs, they'd either slam the door or jiggle the knob. yet, as many times as whoever it was climbed the stairs, we never heard any footsteps going back down.

this happens every time we go to sleep at their house, and even they experience it from time to time.

*no cheap loud noises/flashing pictures plskthx

Ah, true ghost stories. I got a mess of these, as I happen to be a haven for hearing about such things and experiencing them. First, a few innocuous ones:

One night I was in Greece, walking home from a night spent out. We live in a small village, and most of the houses there are insanely old, pre WW1 old, pre good only knows how old. Anyway, I was walking past one house which was owned by some people we knew who were gone for a few weeks visiting relatives on the mainland, when I heard an old woman crying inside. Curious, I stepped up to their screen door and tried to look inside, and of course no one was there. So, I opened the door(its a village after all)and went inside to check if their TV was on or something. Well, there wasn't a living soul in the small house, nor a turned on electrical appliance, but I could still hear that crying. Around that time, I suddenly discovered I was freezing, and I felt like something was behind me. Taking an example from Lot's wife, I just quickly walked out of there without looking back, and didn't sleep that night.

Moving away from my house in Greece for a moment, let us talk about my basement. Now, I'm not sure if this is really anything, but I figure I might as well mention it just in case. Everyone who ever comes down here automatically gets that paranoid feeling that something is creeping up behind them for one thing. Occasionally, we see strange reflections in the TV or computer screens, that quickly send us whirling around to confront the figure that seems to be there. Sleeping down here is never a good idea, since strange things seem to happen. Every time I do it, I have terrible dreams, and have woken up to the feeling of something tapping very hard on my chest. Another time, some of my friends were over and we fell asleep on various couches. When we woke up, we were all in completely different places, and we had all had unsettling dreams. Also, every so often I'll be in the bathroom and hear what sounds like a young woman saying something, which tends to freak the hell out of me. The reason I said I wasn't sure if this was the real thing is because we are the only people who have ever lived in this house, so I fail to see how it could be haunted unless something just migrated in.

Now, another Greece story. One night at around 3 am I was surfing the net as I did as often as possible when I wasn't out partying and whatnot. I was chatting on AIM, when suddenly I stop replying to everything my friends are saying. This is because all of my hair was standing on end(I have an afro, so this is quite an accomplishment), and I was frozen to my seat in pure abject terror. For you see, I had heard the voice of a little girl calling out my name. I've never been that frightened in my life, and I don't know why. It sounds pretty benign, but it just filled my soul to the brim with horror. I was frozen to the spot for a half an hour, until my cat walked into the room and started begging to be let out. So, still in a state of shock, I went out in something of a daze, fed the cat, and put it outside. At around that time, a local dog exploded out of the underbrush and started chasing down all of the cats in the area, including mine, into the woods. It was about then I realized that I had to go into said woods in order to make sure it wasn't dead. Let's summarize: horrifying experience+Irish culture that has banshee's calling out your name before you die+pitch black woods=holy shit, what the hell am I doing out here? Needless to say, I did survive, but I didn't sleep that night either.

My final story is one that was told to me by a friend, and corraborated by evidence. His old dorm was in a building that used to be a bank. Now, this bank once experienced a very bloody robbery, where the criminals rounded up everyone in the bank and put them in the vault for hostage purposes. In the end, the robbers gunned down most if not all of the hostages. Now, the students were sternly told not to go down into the basement of that place, and for good reason, since that's where it happened, and it wasn't a pleasant place. However, being college students, they decided 'what the hell!', picked up a video camera, and went down. The place was really, really damn creepy, really, really cold, and really, really disturbing to be in. They always had the impression that something was there. However, it was later when they watched their tape that they found out that they may have been right about that. For you see, throughout the tape, you can hear whispering voices, pleading for help, or in rare occasions, screaming in agony. They never went back down there anymore, and I can testify that that video is far scarier then anything you can see in the theater.

These are really good. I suck at telling (or hearing) ghost stories.

Keep 'em coming.

Oh wow, very cool stories. Unfortunately, the scariest thing that's ever happened to me is shadows creeping around my room and freaky reflections, which of course turned out to me. Sorry.

Meh, I'd post something about the frequent hallucinations I experience at night, but they're just my subconcious bitching at me for some reason. :?

There have been cases of shadow 'people' it would seem that have been regonizable as actually anything but a shadow. They generally dont come from anything and can disappear into the corner or a room. If you ever have read anything about encounters with them its actually scary. I dont know though if thats what you ment.
