And can't they just put "katanas" as opposed to "samurai swords", for fucks sake? "Samurai swords" sounds fucking stupid.

Makes you just want to go out and assault people with a 'Katana' and a crossbow just to piss them off.

Actually, guns aren't easy to get in Australia nowadays. As I recall, you need a permit, a membership in a shooting club, and you have to register all your weapons. Handguns cannot be above the 9mm caliber range, and no full or semi-automatic long arms (including "plinking" guns like the Ruger 10/22, which is a .22 caliber target and varmint gun chambered - pretty weak stuff). I also recall that pump action shotguns have been banned, to boot.

Guns might as well be considered for collectors over there.

As for guns being for homocidal maniacs, I present this man. Sword attacks in England have gone up, too, relatively speaking.

By the way, this quote bothers me:
"It is about making them generally unavailable to those people who just want to carry them around, either for self- defence or to commit deliberately aggressive acts," he said.
What's wrong with self defense? Britain is against it, and so is Australia now?

I think the issue is that self-defense does not generally have to include dismembering one's aggressor with a sword.

Plus, it is difficult to discern between somebody that wants a sword for self-defense and those who want to use them to kill people in supermarket rampages.

However, I do not necessarily fully support the British institution on this. Playing Devil's Advocate, you understand.

Well, in self defense you shouldn't kill the other person in the process, just defend yourself, and keep em down while the cops come. although they do take forver....

Do you carry around these items? Are you feeling your freedom being imposed upon? How is the fun of many being removed? Granted they are all fucked in Victoria and Tasmania. If you want your freedom back go to the NT.

Remember how the fun of many drug users are removed because of the foolishness of a few who get into shit. These are dangerous items and if we ban one dangerous item we should ban them all.

What purpose does a Katana serve, now or ever, in society? But that of the function of bodily harm. A crossbow can be debated to be used as a hunting weapon but too bad for hunters. I feel safer knowing that no one can just walk into Micks Disposals and pick up a crossbow now.
